Because literacy is not something we add to the plate, it is the plate. Did you know that Pinterest. That social media site that can be a complete time suck, is a great place for professional development? Along with the beautiful images of pristine gardens, food that makes you fat by just looking at it, or the brightly colored, perfectly manicured fingernails (I mean, really, who has time for that) there are hundreds of “pins” by educators. On Thursday, November 21st, an intrepid group of Humanities teachers from PRHS ventured to the big city of Boston for the National Council of English Teachers National Convention. As the day went on, we attended sessions that were excellent. Ian, Kris, Maggie, and I attended a session called. Not only was the session engaging, it clearly conn...

Let Students Request Feedback or Evaluation? April 24, 2015 in Assessment. Grades are not the point. I’m thinking about how to make assessments even lower stakes. The upside of requiring practise problems. So they won’t have to do any practise. That, of course, sours our classroom culture and makes it harder for them to think well. I’m considering a couple of options. One is, when they write a quiz, to ask them whether they are submitting it to be evaluated or just for feedback. Another option is simply ...

How I Grade | Shifting Phases
https://shiftingphases.com/how-i-grade
In January 2011, I overhauled my grading system, and it’s still evolving. In the old system, I tracked 10 assignments, 15 labs, and 4 tests. In the new system, I still give 10 assignments and 15 labs (roughly). I split each test (which would have been about 1.5 hours long) into three 30 minute quizzes. I do this because each question on the quiz targets a particular skill that I want the student to have. I don’t need to know the average of their skills. I need to know. What to help them improve. All the ...
