Outer Hebrides Wildlife Landscapes Search:. We invite you to take a journey through the islands of Innse Gall. From the machair of the west coast to the rugged inlets of the east, across the heather moorland of the uplands, around the inland lochans and through sphagnum bogs. We will introduce you to the wildlife and reveal it in intimate detail through the macro lens of our camera. An archipelago of 120 islands, the Outer Hebrides or Western Isles lie some 30 miles off the northwest coast of Scotland.

Fauna of the Outer Hebrides. Naturally some of the animal groups have been more extensively studied than others, but in general the invertebrate groups are particularly under recorded. We are concentrating on specific groups, particularly Lepidoptera, we are recording and identifying other insects when we encounter them and as time permits. Diptera: Flies and Hoverflies. Hemiptera: Bugs and Hoppers. Hymenoptera: Bees, Wasps, Ichneumons, Sawflies. Lepidoptera: Butterflies and Moths.

Wild Flowers, Trees, Shrubs. Grasses, Ferns, Rushes, Sedges. Flora of the Outer Hebrides. The combination of climate and the geography of the islands the major factors which have determined the biodiversity of the flora and plant distribution. The oceanic nature of the climate is responsible for the richness of the bryophyte flora (mosses and liverworts) and also contributes to the late flowering of many species - the flowers of the machair are probably at their best from mid-June.
