Writing from Palestine: August 2005

http://writingfrompalestine.blogspot.com/2005_08_01_archive.html

Reports from an American activist in the West Bank. Working in solidarity with Palestinians against the occupation. Sunday, August 07, 2005. I think I'll give you the details of my most uneventful morning ever. I woke up early after barely sleeping last night. I said goodbye to Fayrouz and inshallah. Photo: coming and going from the South entrance to Qalandia checkpoint. Posted by Steph at 3:15 PM. Links to this post. Saturday, August 06, 2005. There is a very tiny glimmer of hope here that this incident...

Pustolovina Two: The Adventure Continues: November 2007

http://pustolovina2.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Pustolovina Two: The Adventure Continues. Tuesday, November 20, 2007. More entertaining than 'Evan Almighty'. I was sitting near the back of the American Airlines flight from Brussels to the US. By the time the flight attendant reach me, he had run out of US Customs forms in English. Do you know French or Dutch? I interrupted, "No, If you had the forms in Spanish or Serbian.". Pustolovina: adventure in Serbian: May 2006

http://pustolovina.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html

Pustolovina: adventure in Serbian. Monday, May 29, 2006. A few days ago, I was in my neighborhood nerd supply store (as R. Termed it during his visit) having some photocopies made. On the shelf of books, I spotted the Serbian-language version of Where’s Waldo? It’s called Gde je Gile? I like that they changed Waldo’s name in order to maintain the alliteration,. But is Gile a Serbian name? I don’t think I have met or heard of any Giles since my arrival here. But Waldo is a rare name in the. Bizarre to thi...

Democracy Sometimes: Fear Culture and the Misappropriation of Safe Space

http://democracy-sometime.blogspot.com/2015/04/fear-culture-and-misappropriation-of.html

Activism, cultural criticism, feminism, reflections on state of the left, queer issues, Palestine, dealing with breast cancer and the occasional random thought. Monday, April 13, 2015. Fear Culture and the Misappropriation of Safe Space. Three weeks ago, the New York Times ran a pretty nasty op-ed. By a woman named Judith Shulevitz, ridiculing efforts by college students to make their campuses “safe” or “safer”. We used tools like active listening, guidelines like “Use I statements,” (“...None of this, h...

Pustolovina Two: The Adventure Continues: Representative

Pustolovina Two: The Adventure Continues. Tuesday, February 12, 2008. Last Saturday, I bussed out to my hometown to attend the. This morning, I participated in The National Center for Health Statistics National Survey of Family Growth. An eccentrically dressed prone-to-over-sharing woman asked me about my sexual and reproductive history, opinions on sexual behavior, and family background. It was mildly interesting and I was paid $40 for my 45 minutes. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Some people I know.

Pustolovina: adventure in Serbian: December 2005

http://pustolovina.blogspot.com/2005_12_01_archive.html

Pustolovina: adventure in Serbian. Monday, December 26, 2005. Christmas came and went, I suppose. But it doesn't really feel like that. I also had the first of my new weekly dates with Ira. My aunt gave me a subscription for Christmas. The Christmas spectacular episode is amazing. But there is no day-after-Christmas lull. There are still street vendors selling Christmas decorations at full price. Decorations will still be up for another 2 weeks, as Orthodox Christmas isn't until January 7. After arriving...

Pustolovina: adventure in Serbian. Tuesday, August 30, 2005. I never knew to appreciate all of the cognates in Spanish until I tried to learn relatively cognate-free Arabic. Smart money says I will start appreciating Arabic shortly. I learned a few days ago that there is only one Serbian-English cognate: vampire. I'm picking up. Tomorrow. I'm feeling daunted. I may not be able to say much, but at least I'll be able to talk about Dracula. Posted by rachel @ 9:40 PM. Sunday, August 28, 2005. Saturday, Augu...

Pustolovina: adventure in Serbian. Tuesday, January 31, 2006. Last night, I went to the '70s, or a version of it in which everyone speaks Serbian. There was a workshop in my office last night at 6. I didn't know it was going to happen until 5pm when someone told me. I decided to attend, even though I had no idea of the topic. The leader is a woman that I like. My main lesson of the evening is that I shouldn't drink hot wine before sitting in a hot room listening to people speak a language I only partiall...

Pustolovina Two: The Adventure Continues: Younger

http://pustolovina2.blogspot.com/2008/02/younger.html

Pustolovina Two: The Adventure Continues. Thursday, February 14, 2008. I am now four days younger, at least officially. Consequently, I spent some of my morning at the Social Security office setting them straight. I was really dreading the experience, fearing that it would be a day-long headache. It wasn’t; the woman who helped me was friendly and kind. I was out the door within a half an hour. I was envisioning a day at the MUP. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

http://pustolovina2.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html

Pustolovina Two: The Adventure Continues. Tuesday, April 1, 2008. I have been meaning to write about this for ages, and finally, with my temp job being extra slow today, have found the time. Nearly a month ago, F took an Excel class in. One of her classmates told her about a local coffee place. F, E, and I decided to make a detour on our way to. A few days later in order to experience it. The coffee place, a drive-thru espresso stand called Hot Chick-A-Latte. It felt too early in the day for so much skin.

hannah goes to africa

Hannah goes to africa. Thursday, November 24, 2011. What are you thankful for? After writing their thoughts and exchanging papers, I said that each person would stand up and read the two things on their paper. Then I showed that I had a card for each person along with a brand new pencil to write their math exam with. This last statement literally got applause. Applause. For a pencil. It’s the little things. I’m thankful for my feet for bringing me all the way to beautiful Namibia. I am thankful for my dog.

Teaching and Travels in Morocco. Friday, May 28, 2010. The way people drive here is what you would expect of a place that has few road signs, no marked lanes, and no uniform standards for intersections. There is on intersection near where I work that requires people who want to go straight (continue on the street they were on), to turn off of the street, wait at an intersection, and turn back onto the street.
