To my loved ones, far and near, who I don't see nearly enough. these are for you. I met Anne Lamott. Again last night. The first time I had just returned from Indonesia and was wrought with the emotion of transitioning home and, well, I was just nervous. She was one of my heroes in writing and life, and I wanted to tell her how reading Traveling Mercies. I read an article about eclipses today in Afar. This was just not going to be so simple. I stared at my overflowing pages of personal history and wonder...

To my loved ones, far and near, who I don't see nearly enough. these are for you. See, the week before Jobs died, one of my personal heroes had passed away with little to no fanfare on the international stage. Wangari Maathai. Was an outspoken advocate for women and the environment, one of the first African women to earn a PhD, and a Nobel Prize winner. She was the first woman elected to the Kenyan Parliament, and through the Greenbelt Movement. Yet, as I continued to see more and more articles eulogizin...

To my loved ones, far and near, who I don't see nearly enough. these are for you. For the record, I did not see Borat. Or anyone who resembled anything in that disastrous movie. People were kind and gracious and very smartly dressed. I spent an incredible amount of time not knowing what anyone was saying, but that's totally fine. I did learn a whopping two words of Russian in the process. Within an hour or so from the capital city, we were careening through ice-covered roadways. Almond trees in bloom.

To my loved ones, far and near, who I don't see nearly enough. these are for you. Oh, Nigeria. I left you only months before with exalted hopes and shattered stereotypes. The markets, women entrepreneurs, local leaders in traditional clothes (I was repeatedly told that Nigerians are the best dressed people in Africa,) the rusty rooftops of Ibadan. Once Africa's largest city), gigantic yams, and much more. Enjoy the mini-tour! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Journal from Haiti Video. Indonesia and India Photos.

To my loved ones, far and near, who I don't see nearly enough. these are for you. Share a little light. How many flashlights do you have? Personally, I have about 10, counting the normal size ones (mostly with corroded batteries), the one on my keychain, my headlamp and camping lantern. On the off-chance there is ever a power outage, I will certainly be well-lit! Is there a surplus of lighting devices in your life? Before you answer, let me share a little bit about why I’m asking. Benson Fujo, was killed...

To my loved ones, far and near, who I don't see nearly enough. these are for you. On repeat for hours. Her arms and legs swelled like water balloons, her chest flooded with fluid her heart was too weary to pump away. She teetered often between consciousness, sleep and heaven, and somehow, by the same sheer determination that sustained her through nearly a century in the rural Mississippi hill country, she survived… and came home. Until the rains today brought a chill, and the phone rang with news of anot...

To my loved ones, far and near, who I don't see nearly enough. these are for you. Photos now online here. And a multimedia piece from yesterday's activities below. At the end of my first full day I lay on my cot and scribbled first impressions in a rumpled notebook, trying not to let those initial reactions to this surreal experience slip away. So, yes, we are struggling to get all the supplies out that people need, but are solving problems almost as fast as the crop up, so I remain optimistic! What IS w...

To my loved ones, far and near, who I don't see nearly enough. these are for you. It was no ordinary road trip. Usually the ride to the Delta and back is pretty straightforward - 400 miles, maybe one stop, several Diet Cokes and a brown dog in the back seat. Yesterday, all of that was again the case, but with a few thousand additional passengers - honey bees. During our travels back and forth to our beekeeping class, Dad had assured me the transport wouldn’t be a problem, and I mostly agreed. I...When lo...
