Discovering the wildlife in our garden and beyond in Tropical North Queensland Australia. Exploring The Palmer River Goldfields Of Far North Queensland. One man, James 'Venture' Mulligan - is a true 'Palmer' legend and it was he (along with a few others), who was responsible for the eventual 'opening up' of Far North Queensland. Giant Praying Mantis - Garden Guests
https://gardenguests.blogspot.com/2012/01/green-praying-mantis.html
Discovering the wildlife in our garden and beyond in Tropical North Queensland Australia. This beautiful and quite large Mantis blundered into our garden, and truly these are some of the coolest insects I know of, so I was mighty pleased she did. Highly evolved with an impressive array of weaponry, they make fearsome hunters and will tackle prey quite a lot larger than themselves, inc reptiles and frogs. Anyway, enough of my prattling - here's some pics:. Beautiful in my opinion. Used for grasping prey.

https://gardenguests.blogspot.com/2012/05/strong-stick-insect.html
Discovering the wildlife in our garden and beyond in Tropical North Queensland Australia. Jo and I decided that we would head out looking for some Spiny Leaf Insects, sadly we didn't have any success, however as a consolation prize we did come across this bruiser - a Strong Stick Insect. I've come across these chaps before and they are far more common than you may suspect - but that doesn't detract from their 'wow' factor. Damn good stick imitation there . I have, on a number of occasions, seen Kookaburr...
Potter Wasp Nest Building - Garden Guests
https://gardenguests.blogspot.com/2012/08/mud-dauber-wasp.html
Discovering the wildlife in our garden and beyond in Tropical North Queensland Australia. Potter Wasp Nest Building. Looking a little like something out of a sci-fi flick, Potter wasps are a common site in both the house and the garden. Graceful, strikingly patterned and energetic, I thought they deserved a post all of their own. Potter wasps make their nests out of mud mixed with saliva, they then capture and paralyse other small invertebrates [ usually Spiders or Caterpillars. Potter wasp Delta arcuata.
