Over the past 4 years AVA has discovered that well trained and managed youth volunteers can add value in many contexts: NGOs, micro enterprises and schools. These are our current projects. AVA’s core programme started in 2013 with a pilot programme placing 30 youth into a variety of NGOs. The curriculum focuses on the development of new basic skills and supports the volunteers in building the confidence they need to reap the full benefits of their experience. AVA ran a pilot programme for 30 youth in 2013 placing volunteers in a variety of NGOs. The programme was very successful, with 90% of the volunteers going on to further opportunities. Of these, 16 accessed full-time study opportunities, 5 were retained by their host NGOs and 6 found full-time positions with other organisations and companies. AVA made me what I am today strong, reliable and confident. I saw an opportunity. AVA is a development centre. So why can’t I develop my art here?

In 2014 AVA expanded and ran a more complex programme working with 82 youth, many of whom had not found work since leaving school and had been unemployed for several years. 90% of these recruits found further opportunities, either joining other learnerships, studying full-time, being retained by host organisations or working in new jobs. In this year AVA also piloted the YearBeyond programme, placing 20 volunteers in 4 schools. You have to first start within yourself. AVA is the best home.".
