Frugal Scholar: November 2014

http://frugalscholar.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Drycleaning Tags at the Thrift Store: A Small Town Story. It's that time of year. As a teacher, I am inundated with work to grade. At home, I receive zillions of catalogs from places I've never shopped. Oh yeah, and my email inbox is full of tempting offers. I'm only human. I AM tempted. Then I saw a cleaning tag: B Colwell. B Colwell, B Colwell, I mused. Could BC be a doctor? Then I remembered who B Colwell is! Has been for sale for a few...

Frugal Scholar: September 2014

http://frugalscholar.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Sunday, September 21, 2014. In a Belgrade Cemetery. Two summers ago, Mr FS and I went to Vienna, where my mother was born in 1930. Last summer, we went to Belgrade, where my mother and her parents (and other family members) stayed (1938) before emigrating to the United States. A most moving part of our journey: a visit to a cemetery in Belgrade. Image courtesy of my daughter. See her Tumblr. For more travel illustrations or her website. Links to this post. Miss Em an...

Frugal Scholar: A technique for shopping your closet

http://frugalscholar.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-technique-for-shopping-your-closet.html

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Thursday, June 25, 2015. A technique for shopping your closet. I have a tendency to wear the same things over and over- a common affliction based on the well-known 80/20 Pareto Principle. I just packed for my trip (following the guidelines of the great Sue of unefemme. Hence, I perforce HAD to wear things that were not in my suitcase for my last few days at home. That was the "other" 80% Wow! June 27, 2015 at 11:49 AM. Best advice I read is to force yourself to wear ...

Frugal Scholar: April 2015

http://frugalscholar.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Sunday, April 12, 2015. Good Deal on Paula's Choice: Sunday Only. Miss Em and I have a subject line that we sometimes use: Shallow. That tells Mr FS not to bother opening the email. This subject line alerts the reader that the topic will be various shallow bargains: sales on stuff I think Miss Em might want, stuff I might want, things like that. 2 If you spend $50, you get a free sample of Vitamin C something that promises to fade dark spots. Frugal Scholar: March 2015

http://frugalscholar.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Friday, March 27, 2015. Now that Mr FS and I are in our 60s, we are having lots of "what" and "when" discussions. When should we retire? What if.we retire? What if.we have to retire? And, of course, the biggies: What is it I/we really want? What's it all about? And that brings us to "ends." Ends in the sense of "purposes." Ends in the sense of "the end." I've been thinking about endings, well, ever since I became a serious reader. To that end, I've redone my wardrobe...

Scrooge Attack: November 2009

http://scroogeattack.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Friday, November 20, 2009. Thrift stores are expensive.I doubt it. Thrift stores have become trendy. I don't like it. With the advent of a lack of economic prosperity, all the hip rich kids who wish to show that they are one with the lower class have ventured to the places of thrift. The original owners of these jeans were killed by a bear. Oh well, I look GOOD. Now with a rush of the frugal rich, some people are challenging that thrift stores are getting more expensive because of the increase in demand.

Just Outside the Loop: I Went to School for This?

http://justoutsidetheloop.blogspot.com/2011/07/i-went-to-school-for-this.html

Just Outside the Loop. Celebrating NOT having it all together. Wednesday, July 27, 2011. I Went to School for This? Gus is sick.again. Some sort of generic intestinal distress. Practically this translates into about ten poopy. Diapers a day and a moderately disgruntled toddler. We've been quarantined.again. Nothing to do in the house but read, and read, and read, and read. Oh! I forgot about that part. Weeks like this make me feel that my education is being wasted. July 28, 2011 at 7:22 AM. Notes from th...

Just Outside the Loop: Come Join the Pity Party

http://justoutsidetheloop.blogspot.com/2012/06/come-join-pity-party.html

Just Outside the Loop. Celebrating NOT having it all together. Wednesday, June 6, 2012. Come Join the Pity Party. Even medicated, he's completely miserable. And then I looked in his mouth and it's completely white. Thrush? That's not an emergency. So I'll wait till tomorrow to get him looked at. So 14 more hours of dealing with a squalling 12 lb. bundle solo. The other boy is covered in a "heat rash" (says the allergist) that gets worse every day. Heat rash? Where is this stuff in the parenting books?

Not Living on Ramen: December 2009

http://notlivingonramen.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Not Living on Ramen. I'm a somewhat geeky physics enthusiast hoping to be a not-so-broke grad student as I return to school after TFA. Thursday, December 17, 2009. The day my job finally drove me to drink. So, yeah, I had a bourbon and soda and am now ready to have a good long cry, get some sleep, and get up and grade tests. Tuesday, December 15, 2009. Saturday, December 12, 2009. Sunday, December 6, 2009. November is the new October. So the next few days were a blur. We all knew this was coming even...

Just Outside the Loop. Celebrating NOT having it all together. Tuesday, July 12, 2011. Sarah Vs. the Black Thumb (part whatever the second). After returning from Indy I wandered to my back yard to water my plants that had been neglected for four days. Apparently there was a really windy day at some point because the umbrella from our patio set had been whipped from its stand and the main post wrenched in two. Seriously.the metal just sheared off.I'm amazed. Things that make me smile. Da Da Da DAH!

Permanent Head Damage: August 2013

http://mypermheaddamage.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 23, 2013. The Business Casual Hippy. The thing I miss most about graduate school is the dress code: Not only could I get away with wearing anything, but having worked for six years prior to entering my Ph.D. program I took full advantage of that fact. Colored tights, ridiculous dresses, hats, and outrageous outfits that would only be appropriate on a college campus or a bus bench were de rigueur. And building a thrift store fabulous. The 85% Rule: Or How to Make Good Decisions. Even though...

Thursday, August 13, 2015. Olive, Wine and Gold join A Common Wardrobe, warm tones for summer. In honor of the season (in the Northern Hemisphere) of the ripening of all delicious things, I give you the "Tuscan inspired" wine, olives, and gold that was sent to me a few days ago. And yes, I did choose that bracelet because it reminded me of olive trees and grape vines. Earrings – Alexis Bittar. Tee – J. Crew. 8211; Janna Conner. Changing Lives…One Family at a Time…. Head Lice Treatments – Frugal & Effective. My niece keeps coming home from school with head lice! They both have beautiful hair; long, very fine, lots of curls – and lots of it. So you can imagine how hard it is to get rid of them. So far, every time she bought this expensive shampoo, and because of the sheer quantity of hair, they went through the bottle every time she came home with them. Until this last time! As with everything, some brands are better than others.

Lessons from a lifetime of frugality. Sunday, December 31, 2017. Margaret Atwood Robber Bride. Not a very good book, alas. I do like Blind Assassin. Opened to the right page though: 262. Once she went back to the farm, her grandmother's farm, she wanted to see it. But it wasn't a farm anymore; it was a subdivision. Charis tried not mind, since nothinbg that was or had been would perish, and the farm was still inside her;it was still hers because places belonged to the people who loved them. Things I like...
