Franciscan Sisters in the making. Here’s were you get to ask all those questions you’ve always wanted to ask about religious life, life as a postulant or novice or whatever. Similar to looking at colleges I guess haha, except maybe staying longer? I am from NJ but a lot of orders I am looking at are far away, just wondering how it all works. When I came ...

Franciscan Sisters in the making. Lenten Devotions – Seven Last Words. February 21, 2013. Just thought I would drop a little note in here to share a lenten devotion that we have a t the convent. It is called the Seven Last Words and it is a meditation on the passion of Christ, focusing on the last seven”sayings” of Christ. I scanned a copy of the booklet we use if you would like to pray it too. From → convent life. Larr; Items of Interest. God Bless his Holiness, Pope Francis I! Leave one →. Our page on ...

Christmas at the Convent | Franciscan Footprints

https://franciscansisterspeoria.wordpress.com/2012/12/26/christmas-at-the-convent

Franciscan Sisters in the making. Christmas at the Convent. December 26, 2012. Christmas is one of my favorite times of year, and the season leading up to it I like almost as much. On the night of December 16th, we begin our Christmas Novena. We process into chapel by candle light, singing advent hymns. Before Jesus exposed in the Blessed Sacrament, we chant the old testament prophesies, sing canticles and the O Antiphons. It ends with Benediction, if we have a priest available. Sponsa Christi: Consecrated Virginity versus Secular Institutes

http://sponsa-christi.blogspot.com/2015/07/consecrated-virginity-versus-secular.html

A young consecrated virgin reflects on her vocation. What Is a Consecrated Virgin? Sunday, July 26, 2015. Consecrated Virginity versus Secular Institutes. 8221; How does she present herself in public? What sort of formation should she have had? How is her relationship with her bishop and her diocese supposed to function? And what exactly does it mean for her to be “dedicated to the service of the Church? Notes from Stillsong Hermitage: On the Question of Selfishness versus Hiddenness lived for Others

http://notesfromstillsong.blogspot.com/2015/08/on-question-of-selfishness-versus.html

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage. On the Question of Selfishness versus Hiddenness lived for Others. Sister Laurel, are you saying it is unnecessary to use our gifts? Aren't hermits called to use their gifts? Also, how can one tell the difference between selfishness and the generous hiddenness of the hermit? On the Distinction Between Selfishness and Generous Hiddenness:. How do we tell the difference between selfishness and a hiddenness which is lived for others? Reasons for seeking canonical standing.

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage: On the Distinction Between Using Gifts and Being the Gift

http://notesfromstillsong.blogspot.com/2015/07/on-distinction-between-using-gifts-and.html

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage. On the Distinction Between Using Gifts and Being the Gift. Hi Sister. I've been reading what you wrote on chronic illness as vocation. I wondered why God would give a person gifts they could never really use. And if their gifts can't be used then how do they serve or glorify God? I mean I do believe people who can't use God-given gifts still serve God but we are supposed to use our gifts and what if we can't? Am I making sense? To something God did within me. (This shi...

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage: if everything happens that can't be done (or One Times One)

http://notesfromstillsong.blogspot.com/2015/08/if-everything-happens-that-cant-be-done.html

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage. If everything happens that can't be done (or One Times One). Forty-five years ago I did a presentation for an English class. As a result I also published my first article in the journal, The Explicator. That the journal sent me five copies addressed to "Professor Laurel M O'Neal, Department of English" when I had merely been a Sophomore at the college was a real thrill for me! The presentation involved two poems by e.e. cummings. If everything happens that can't be done.

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage. More on the Hiddenness of the Hermit Vocation. Hi Sister Laurel, thank you for telling your story from the perspective of using gifts vs being the gift. Two things surprised me a little. The first was the idea that the hiddenness of the eremitical life has to do mainly with the work God is doing within the hermit. This really is the vocation of the hermit and where else can it happen but in hiddenness? The Hiddenness of the Hermit Vocation:. So that who we are ourselves, t...

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage. Contents of a Lay Hermit's Prayer Space? Brother Emmaus O'Herlihy, OSB (Glenstal). Saint Romuald in Ecstasy Receiving the Gift of Tears. Dear Sister Laurel, What should a lay hermit have in their chapel? Thanks for your question. I think the term chapel is a bit overblown and would consider not using it, especially not in the absence of reserved Eucharist or if the room is mainly. The basic question I think is, "What do you need to pray? Update on Dominican Sisters in Iraq.

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage. The Cross: Revelation of a Humility that Stands in Spite of Humiliation (Reprise). Dear Sister, when we look at the cross I don't think your distinction between humiliation and humility holds. Jesus suffers all kinds of humiliation and is humbled. He shows real humility as a result of his humiliation.] (cf. From Humiliation to Humility: Resting in the Gaze of God. Human beings lift or hold us up to shame. God raises to humility. Notes from Stillsong Hermitage: On the Distinction Between Anchorites and Hermits

http://notesfromstillsong.blogspot.com/2015/07/on-distinction-between-anchorites-and.html

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage. On the Distinction Between Anchorites and Hermits. Dear Sister Laurel, I was recently reading a book on the history of Christian hermits. The book made the distinction between hermits and anchorites. I have read about this distinction before and it does seem present in the Middle Ages. Certain saints are described as either anchorites OR hermits. Not both. It would seem that the vocations are similar but different. Seems to have been written for just such a reason. See...

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage: On the Problem with Long-Winded Prayers

http://notesfromstillsong.blogspot.com/2015/08/on-problem-with-long-winded-prayers.html

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage. On the Problem with Long-Winded Prayers. Dear Sister, why would Jesus prohibit long prayers with many words? And of God knows what we need before we pray, why do we pray at all? Do you have a favorite prayer you use every day? I think you are referring to Matthew's instruction on prayer, no? God has already given himself to us. Our prayer lets that gift be accepted and received. It stresses the urgency of my prayer, and it helps me be patient. It also reflects my own c...

Notes from Stillsong Hermitage. Private Dedication: The Significance of the Lay Eremitical Vocation (Once Again). Can't he simply recognize that? And therefore, does not represent the mediation of a public ecclesial vocation in the Church. It was undoubtedly a remarkable experience which I hope you will esteem for the rest of your life, but it did not function as an ecclesial profession and consecration under canon 603 functions nor can it therefore be used to substitute for these. Public vs private vows.

The Franciscan Sisters of Washington DC | Bringing St. Francis into the heart of the world

The Franciscan Sisters of Washington DC. Bringing St. Francis into the heart of the world. The Power of Trust. November 8, 2012 by franciscansrsdc. But do we trust God? Can we really trust the God we do not see if we cannot trust the neighbor we see? Francis of Assisi learned this lesson early on in his spiritual life. He had a great disdain of lepers and would run away at the first sight of a leper. However, shortly after his conversion (in which he experienced God’s love overflowing love for him. July ...
