Early in 2013, the FVMP sponsored poet Gary Glazner, founding director of the Alzheimer's Poetry Project. As he trained staff from five facilities in using poetry for joyous, creative engagement. Later that spring, we brought residents who had participated in the poetry programs to the Thompson Community Center for a "poetry party." The Fox Valley Memory Project is committed to ongoing community education designed to reduce fear of dementia and the stigma associated with it. In 2013, a major community education event drew more than 400 people. The following day, a full-day CME event for physicians led by two acclaimed geriatric psychiatrists allowed more than 60 medical professionals (mostly primary care physicians) learn how to better care for their patients contending with memory loss or cognitive change.

The Fox Valley community embraced the project and we were off and running! We opened the doors to the Memory Loss Resource Center in the spring of 2013 and we welcome those experiencing dementia, their family members and friends to come in on an individual basis for information and support or to participate in the various groups and activities formed to engage and enhance the quality of life for those involved.
