Naturalista: June 2006

http://kristijoy.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

Here in the NW the weeds grow high as your head and the blackberry vines thick as your thumb, even in the heart of Portland. Sunday, June 11, 2006. Went home from work early today, my throat was/is sore. But I spent some time outside taking things in, looking about. Seeds I planted last week have already begun to sprout. What was only three little green shoots last night has become a riot of bitty green dots on brown. I have begun my foray into composting. So far, no smell. This is good.

Naturalista: Recycling plants?

http://kristijoy.blogspot.com/2007/04/recycling-plants.html

Here in the NW the weeds grow high as your head and the blackberry vines thick as your thumb, even in the heart of Portland. Thursday, April 12, 2007. Is a great place to get inexpensive mature plants and do two good things at once. Firstly, this is like a thrift shop for plants, the are being reused and resold. How cool is that? And secondly, this volunteer run garden shop is for the benefit of POPPA, pet overpopulation prevention associates. The sale we went to last Saturday was crazy!

Here in the NW the weeds grow high as your head and the blackberry vines thick as your thumb, even in the heart of Portland. Wednesday, August 30, 2006. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Redesign! Now I can go buy groceries and stuff and use neither paper nor plastic at the store, market or Sauvie AND the totes are being reused as well. How green. And they are cute enough to use for other things too, like knitting supplies! Monday, August 28, 2006. Good Bugs, Bad Bugs. I cried. Aphids. I turned my compost pile tod...

Naturalista: Springing into Action

http://kristijoy.blogspot.com/2007/03/springing-into-action.html

Here in the NW the weeds grow high as your head and the blackberry vines thick as your thumb, even in the heart of Portland. Tuesday, March 27, 2007. Oregon is awash in rain, rain, rain. The trees are all blooming, and it's snowing blossom petals too. It's lovely, chilly, and wet. I long to go actualy dig in the dirt, to till soil and turn and sift compost. To plant seeds that can be planted outside right now. But I am lucky if I can mow the unkept lawn when it needs it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Food wasted, never tasted. I want to share a commentary, a bit of “food for thought” if you will, I recently wrote after reading an article on Minnesota Public Radio. Regarding the massive amount of food waste in the United States. The USDA did the math and figured out that all the food we trash in the US is equivalent to 141 trillion calories, or 1,249 calories per capita per day. It’s enough calories to feed approximately 193 million people, EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR. The USDA also estimates that in 2012.
