Paris | The Five Hundreds

Life in small pieces. June 23, 2015. A few years back, my wife and I went to Greece on holiday. The hotel was a short taxi ride from the airport; within half an hour we were high up in the hills, looking out over the sea, while our fellow passengers back at the airport were still jumping on coaches. The hotel staff took our suitcases and fixed us a long drink while they checked our room was ready. I spotted a couple going past, wheeling their cases, on their way to reception to check out, and thought.

Life in small pieces. June 30, 2015. We stopped at Jaurès metro station, waiting to change lines, feet aching after an afternoon spent slogging through Montmartre in the punishing heat. Too tired for the stairs, we took the lift down to the basement with a dozen others. When we arrived, the gate out on to the corridor was shut. Someone tried to open it, to no avail. It felt as if the smell got stronger. An older man went up and hammered the intercom button. A tinny voice tried to placate my fellow in...

Life in small pieces. July 23, 2015. Last Christmas Day, my wife and I were in Granada at the bar of Bodegas Castaneda, calling across the hubbub for more vermouth. There were two concessions to the festive season: the bull’s head on the wall wore a Santa hat and a tinsel necklace, the hams hanging from the ceiling were strung with fairy lights. The owners were a couple she was sturdy and bustling, he was tall and slim, all beard and elbows. Their welcome had a quiet power; we ordered tea and they re...

Life in small pieces. October 7, 2015. Lunch is sacrosanct, so even though nobody’s around I leave the building and stroll through the industrial estate to the nearby café. I don’t have an umbrella and almost right away my suit is dark-spotted with drizzle, but there’s music in my headphones and I want to spend an hour somewhere else, a place where the chatter won’t be about my work, where I won’t recognise any faces. It shouldn’t be here. The rest of the walk is uneventful. The rain eases off. I...Last ...
Disconnect | The Five Hundreds

Life in small pieces. May 28, 2015. My wife calls me once she’s settled in in her hotel room and I think, not for the first time, about the awkward time difference between Helsinki and here. Two hours not so big that conversation is impossible, but significant enough to make it jarring. She is in bed, her journey and her day almost over. And me? I’m sitting on a wall outside having stopped on my way to the pub, not long having been admiring the gorgeous, coral-coloured sunset over the side streets. You a...

Newer posts →. July 31, 2014 · 10:20 pm. For years Walking Man and I took the same road. He, on foot. Me, by car. In opposite directions. He, south. Me, north. Me, south. He, north. Mile after mile, day after day. Always passing. Passing the vacant lots, the hookers, the bus stops, the broken glass, the gun shop, the organic co-op, the eCigarette store, the cross-fit and yoga studios, the mani/pedi salon, the school, the Dollar Store, the paint shop. After Christmas came and went this odd winter, Walking...

The Straight and Narrow. All That Science* →. December 5, 2014 · 4:28 am. We left the dinner table and turned the television on to public broadcasting the stolid, unflashy journalism of non-commercial news. PBS allowed us to take a pass on the stacked rows of talking heads, the frenetic split screens, and the emergency-of-the-day theme music of the major media outlets. We tweeted back and forth a bit. He wrote about seeing history in the making, about his hopes that the turmoil would lead to change.

A Moment: Morning Has Broken →. January 28, 2015 · 12:31 am. This week I’m posting an excerpt from an essay I wrote about skiing the Blackcomb Glacier in Whistler, B.C., last winter. Whistler’s Blackcomb Glacier: An Immense Geological Marvel. It takes a moment to consider this, to feel the impact of your true size against the immense backdrop of land formations that evolved from forces that we can understand intellectually, but that are suddenly inexplicable when you’re staring right at them….&...Fill in...

There doesn’t have to be a point →. March 16, 2015 · 4:06 pm. A Moment: Morning Has Broken. I was driving under overcast skies early this morning, listening to the radio and singing along to “Morning Has Broken” by Cat Stevens. Just as I crested a hill towards the lake, the sun burst through two layers of clouds, flooding the windshield with light. A perfect moment with a perfect soundtrack. Filed under A Moment. If You're Lucky, You're Lucky Every Time | Just another WordPress.com weblog
If You're Lucky, You're Lucky Every Time. May 2, 2010 · 10:21 pm. By Paul Weyrich and William S. Lind. Above all, Weyrich and Lind stress the individual, local nature of Retroculture; their motto is think locally, act locally, a play on the think globally, act locally slogan of the political left, and also a certain evocation of the ideas of Edmund Burke (25). My favorite quote from this book concerns this individual, non-coercive approach: the only safe form of power is the power of example, (50). First...

FIVE HUNDRED SHADES OF GREAT
FIVE HUNDRED SHADES OF GREAT. Tuesday, August 28, 2012. CHAPTER THREE: BETRAYAL, MOST FOUL. INTRODUCTION TO THE THIRD CHAPTER. My apologies for not updating this sooner, dear readers, but I have been distracted by the many personal and professional demands upon my time. The small-minded idiots at work, my so-called "managers," refuse to give me a moments peace, and insist on hounding me with a never-ending list of tedious chores they expect me to complete. Haven't I done enough for them? I have spent a l...

Advice worth 500 sheep. Peacebuildings. Aid. Humanitarism. Whatever. Sunday, 22 September 2013. How do people get around Goma? I know you have all been asking this question.
