Raglan Castle – Eight towers, one drawbridge.

Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 3, 2013. OK, I’ll give Raglan Castle the full treatment it deserves. Beautiful setting. Impressive castle. Nice day. No drawbridge. The castle consists of an inner compound with keep surrounded by a deep moat. Very dramatic from any perspective. It’s filled with regular rocks and mortar. See the circular hole in the castle wall below? As promised, Raglan Castle does have a dungeon with only one way in....

Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 13, 2013. Roast beef and fudge. I took the tube to Blackfriar’s Station and walked over the Millennium Bridge, although this is a photo from UNDER the Millennium Bridge. I had a wonderful view of the (rebuilt) Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre (from on TOP of the bridge). See how I made my food run look like a cultural event? Then there’s the market. A lot of dead kings and … Sir Laurence Olivier? – Eight towers, one drawbridge.

Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 10, 2013. A lot of dead kings and … Sir Laurence Olivier? Wow Wow, wow. How it has taken me until my third visit to London to see Westminster Abbey, I do not know. If you have ONE day in London, the Abbey has to be on your list. Right after Harrods. No, seriously. Anyways, Scone Stone was finally returned to Scotland in 1996, but will be returned to Westminster Abbey. Speaking of nerds, I downloaded an app...

Pembroke Castle, Part II – Eight towers, one drawbridge.

Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 9, 2013. Pembroke Castle, Part II. So much of Pembroke Castle still remains, albeit in ruins. It was fun to wander around and picture what the castle would have looked like so many years ago. Above is the Great Hall where all of the castle residents would have been fed and entertained. Of course, we’re looking at both the first and second floors of the Great Hall. Or a staircase to the top of the wall?

Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 4, 2013. 8221; He hadn’t seen any of them and couldn’t figure out why anyone would. It had the makings of a really bad comedy movie. Well, it might have if he’d been, say Gerard Butler? But he was decidedly not. Maybe Gerard’s father. Or a very distant and very welsh uncle. Very, very beautiful view over the valley from the base of the castle. I was able to walk around the castle wall almost all the way.

Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 8, 2013. Pembroke Castle, Part I. Wow, there’s so much to show you of my trip to Pembroke Castle, I’ve decided to break it into two posts. I took a cab from where I’m staying in Saundersfoot to the train station in Tenby and then a twenty minute train ride to the town of Pembroke and a fifteen minute walk to the castle in the middle of town. You could be forgiven for thinking that I’d visited Pembrok...

Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 1, 2013. A delightful start to the trip! Well, the castle traipsing got off to a wonderful start with a lovely day in south Wales on Saturday. A week from now I may beat myself up for saying this, but if it rains for the rest of the trip I’ll still count myself lucky for this day. This will be a short post mostly to let you all know I’m alive and on the ground. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. But h...

Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 13, 2013. Eggs, sidewalks and a really, really bad bed. Some random London-related thoughts as I say good-bye to the city once again. And yep, not a castle story in the bunch. Yeah, eggs. They’re sold on the shelf in the grocery store. Next to the bread. Not refrigerated. Huh. Do Londoners work weird hours like 10 to 7? Or do they just work shorter days? Or do they, as a culture, play a lot of hooky? I am ...

Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 4, 2013. Robin Hood & Ale? Why constrain my research strictly to castles when there are so many other buildings that made up a medieval village? And for the record, no I did not see the inside of it, let alone run up a tab! Eight towers, one drawbridge. Looking beyond the fairytales one medieval castle at a time. December 5, 2013. Went for an early dinner so that I could see the beach before the sun went down.
