El león de la selva. Sunday, May 20, 2012. It’s seems like a dream when I realize that my time with Peace Corps Dominican Republic is over. I’ll be back in Pennsylvania for the summer on May 24. And who knew that leaving was going to be the hardest part? We spent our last few months finishing up our latrine project. Here are a few photos. We also traveled to visit several other volunteers’ communities. The DR continues to astound me with its biodiversity. We visited a batey. Free lunch at any doña’s.

We live on top of a ridge so according to my neighbors our communities suffered very little damage compared to the neighboring areas in the lower valleys. Initial reports state that quite a few families lost their homes and a coffee nursery and many greenhouses were flooded. Many of the vegetables that weren’t flooded rotted because the roads were impassable for a few days. I go out with the neighbor kids and we spend an hour or so knocking down avocados and ...
