Gulangyu island in Xiamen. Leave a comment ». Just stayed a few days on Gulangyu island in Xiamen. Highly recommend it to anyone travelling around China in need of a few days relaxation. We stayed in the Naya Hotel. They are busy at weekends – but I think during the week should be no problem getting a room. Food isn’t great on the island – at least we had difficulty! I’ve known about this place for years, but didn’t realise how good it is, or how easy it is to get here from Hong Kong. First getting here: there are direct buses. From Hong Kong which take around 3 1/2 hours. The buses use the Shenzhen Bay border crossing, so immigration into China is fast. The buses are also comfortable, and the roads good.
