Beyond The Lawn: May 2010
http://beyondthelawn.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 2, 2010. With fava beans and a fine chianti. I just harvested our first fava beans today. We planted a long, 20 ft row of them as a cover crop, and left about 5 feet of plants to eat once the beans did their magic to the tired soil. I hope this is good (I just made this recipe up, and have the audacity to put it on the blog without trying it first), but how can you go wrong with these delicious, precious beans that only grow for a few moments each year? Fava Beans With Onion and Mint. Melt bu...

Saturday, November 20, 2010. The House Of Orange And Other Tales. Unfortunately, they taste really bland. I keep waiting to pull them all up and take them over to my friend Leslie, feed them to Pie and Jake, her two horses, and be done with it. The rogue carrots are white. Believe it or not, Britain's Carrot Museum. I know, that is really weird), disputes this and calls it a myth. I, for one, love that story and I'm sticking to it. I planted all sorts of carrots about a month ago - Cosmic Purple. You wou...

This Gardening Life: August 2006
http://thisgardeninglife.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 22, 2006. Ah, August. The Fair is over, but for the annoying details. Time to see what's up in the garden. And what's up? Madame Alfred Carrier has reached new heights and widths, along with everything else on the side yard. It's created a lovely and fragrant canopy of welcomed shade in this record breaking hundred degree summer. While hacking my way through this jungle I was reminded of the easy care virtues of plectranthus. The photos above left and below are plectranthus Mona Lavendar.

Sunday, November 27, 2005. Heavenly Fragrance, Pretty Poison. Life is full of trade offs. We often put up with nuisances because they give us pleasure. Men often marry troublesome, labor intensive, high maintenance women because they are beautiful. The plant kingdom has it's share of prima donnas, too. Angel's Trumpet is one of them. Datura, or specifically, Brugmansia x candida. Is a member of the very large solanaceae. The "common name for a plant known botanically as Datura stramonium,. Grow yourself ...

This Gardening Life: December 2005

Monday, December 26, 2005. My little side yard, formerly a driveway leading to my nearly useless 80 year old garage, has become a haven for migrating birds. Today I was able to photograph through my kitchen window this Wilson's Warbler. It's mate, less colorful and much more cautious about sitting still, was also nearby. Here is a link to the Cornell Ornithology project. My sister Vanessa ( see bug blog link. Answer to above question came from Vanessa herself. Posted by Garden Goyle at 6:04 PM. A lot of ...

Bamboo Geek: February 2012
http://bamboogeek.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
All about bamboo plants and other related topics. Tuesday, February 28, 2012. Recent warmth brings out the best in a beautiful bamboo. What a treat it was to get an e-mail with a photo attached from Aaron, a customer who obtained a Himalayacalamus hookerianus 'Teague's Blue Bamboo' from me in November 2011. I have blogged on this specific variety many times. One blog post was picked up on a popular garden blog, Dirt du Jour. So without further adieu, here is what Aaron sent me. Believe it or not. sam...

non-secateur: Plants we like: Crassula ovata 'Undulata'
http://non-secateur.blogspot.com/2011/11/plants-we-like-crassula-ovata-undulata.html
Monday, November 28, 2011. Plants we like: Crassula ovata 'Undulata'. There are so many plants that I love or want to love. It's so hard to figure out where to put them all. I remember when I first heard about Crassula ovata 'Undulata' (EuroAmerican has it as 'Jitters') from a post on Dirt Du Jour. So, now I like it so much I want to really let it kick up its heals. The question is where? Being the frugal gardener that I am, I will be taking cuttings to get the look I want, not buying more plants. My Cra...
