Writing about technology in the Dental Practice. Just when I thought I was out. they pull me back in. In a previous life, I put together quite a few point of sale systems. I have since put that behind me to focus on the dental trade, of which there is plenty to learn. But when a door opens, do you walk through it or go about your business? Well, I chose to try and not let it hit me on may way through. Well, yes. Let me explain. Possible for a dental office? Absolutely. Will it make a difference? NOD32 ha...

Writing about technology in the Dental Practice. When smaller is better. For years I've been recommending the Gyration keyboard and mouse primarily due to the small form factor of the keyboard. Space on the countertops of operatory cabinets is always at a premium. Installing a full-size keyboard, even wireless, creates competition with dental instruments and supplies on a daily basis. This is where the Gyration keyboard excelled; a smaller footprint leaving room for what is truly necessary. Not that I wo...

Writing about technology in the Dental Practice. Not all x-rays are created equal. Can you spare a JPEG? And no, I don't mean DICOM files exported from your digital imaging software renamed with a .jpg extension. I'm referring to your garden-variety JPEG format image that every dental imaging software is capable of exporting. Why do I ask, you say? Well, as digital imaging becomes more common, so do my calls from clients complaining that they cannot view the x-rays that office "B" just sent them via email.

Writing about technology in the Dental Practice. Disaster recovery done right. What happens when the computer used to process all digital x-rays via phosphor plate encounters a hardware failure, bringing all x-ray production to a standstill? Pick up the phone in a panic and hope that technical support can resurrect the system? Fortunately, in this case it was a regular client. One hour later, everything is up and running as if nothing ever happened. Coincidence? Same as it ever was. There haven't been an...
