There are a few names that come up over and over again when researching the history of Couderay. While there haven't been all that many who've called Couderay home, there would be no way to feature the many who made this town what it was, and what it is today. These are just a few. CM Olson had a huge influence on Couderay, from the lumber industry to his scholarships to local students throughout the years. He wrote an early history of Couderay. In addition, here are obituaries of local residents.

Couderay today is a sleepy little town, much like it has been for the past century. Its population, as you'll see on signs leading into town in either direction on Highway 27-70, was last recorded as 96. There are no retail businesses operating in town these days, with the exception of a tavern, which is only open on occasion. A quick drive around town will reveal a ball diamond, a picnic area along the Tuscobia Trail ATV route, two inactive churches and the Evergreen Cemetery.

The name "Couderay" was derived from the name given to the area by French explorers - Lac Courte Oreilles. The town owes its birth to the lumber the area provided and the sawmill established near Eddy Creek, at the east end of the modern town. An early advocate for the town was C.M. Olson, a lumberman and station agent in Couderay. A pamphlet advertising the town was written by Olson. Once a boomtown, then a quiet village that served as home to many families, Couderay has seen many businesses.
