Andrew Carnegie가 1900년에 Carnegie Institute of Technology (CIT) 설립. 1967년에 CIT와 Mellon Institute (Andrew Mellon이 설립)가 합쳐져서 Carnegie Mellon Univesity가 되었음. 전산, 공학, 경영, 예술, 그리고 인문/사회/자연 과학 등의 분야가 있음. 현재 학생 수는 학부생이 약 5000명, 대학원생이 약 3000명. 수업료는 1년에 $21,275 정도 (봄 가을 학기, 98-99년). 단대마다 다름. 매년 4-5% 정도 증가하고 있습니다. 1900년대에 CIT의 수업료가 $20-$30 이었답니다. :).
