Wednesday, November 22, 2006. Well, the elections are over. The Mayor and his anointed barnacle, Wendy Leece, have captured seats on the City Council by ever increasing margins - much to my chagrin. However, it's time to think about the things for which I'm thankful. Fortunately, the campaign was so rife with turkeys that it's easy to get in the mood for Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for the diverse groups of Costa Mesa citizens who supported Garlich and Scheafer, including those good folks who formed Retur...

Saturday, January 06, 2007. Bruce Garlich Resigns From Planning Commission. Having gotten to know Bruce over the past few years has been a high point of my life and I'm proud to call him my friend. He's a man of intelligence, energy and integrity and his mature leadership on the Planning Commission will be sorely missed, as will his participation in the numerous volunteer organizations that he serves. Hopefully, he will return to these activities in the near future. Links to this post. So, as promised to...

Friday, December 15, 2006. White Supremacists Snagged - Where's The CM Press? The local media this morning reported that 57 white supremacists were arrested in sweeps throughout Orange County. The Los Angeles Times, here. And the Orange County Register, here. Had basically the same story - 300 law enforcement personnel though out the county coordinated raids in several cities. Neither mentioned Costa Mesa. However, our newspaper of record, The Daily Pilot, in a story by Michael Alexander, here. In the pa...

Thursday, November 16, 2006. ICEing Down The Costa Mesa Jail. Tonight Byron de Arakal, on his blog Itchingpost.com. Apparently scooped the world by reporting that United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will perform immigration screening of suspected aliens in the Costa Mesa Jail. The report is derived from an Orange County Register article. Posted online tonight which outlines the plan. Subsequently, the Daily Pilot provided online coverage. One report implies the answer is yes. Does...

Wednesday, December 27, 2006. Blogs, As Viewed By The Wall Street Journal. On December 20th, 2006, Joseph Rago, an assistant editorial features editor at The Wall Street Journal, wrote a commentary in that fine newspaper entitled "The Blog Mob". In his piece the writer addresses the evolution of blogs (like this one, perhaps) in very critical terms. No surprise there, since the blogosphere has been nibbling off pieces of the print media's turf for some time now. I suspect many of us who author blogs get ...

Friday, December 22, 2006. Can your hear them? Last night I thought I heard, way off in the distance, the sound of sleigh bells. It might be my imagination, but I'm almost positive I heard them. Maybe I'm just getting too wrapped up in this "holiday" thing. Or, maybe it's just the sound of electric meters spinning all over town. Do you like the picture at the top of this column? It must be plugged into two separate electrical circuits or it will blow the panel! Her whole house is decorated for the season...

Saturday, November 04, 2006. Read All About It! That glow in the sky you see tonight is the mayor's campaign going down in flames. Byron de Arakal over at Itchingpost.com is reporting this evening that Sheriff Mike Carona, in a letter to the Daily Pilot scheduled to hit the streets Sunday, will drop a bombshell in the lap of our young jailer/mayor three days before the election. Posted by The Pot Stirrer at 11/04/2006 10:50:00 PM. Links to this post. Friday, November 03, 2006. In the same paper. Snow...

Monday, November 27, 2006. Let's see now, the election is less than a month behind us and a fellow who very much resembles my theoretical character "Your Neighbor" has slithered out from under his rock again, which is no surprise to me at all. After staying under cover for the past couple months to avoid being even more of a lightning rod for controversy, he's back with a vengeance. Two weeks ago he published an entry on his blog that is straight out of his repertoire. Links to this post. Bruce Krochman'...

Thursday, December 07, 2006. Freedom - Never Forget. Yesterday, December seventh, 1941, a date which will live in infamy, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. Today I ask each of you to look around you and view all the things we take for granted. We complain about traffic and the cost of fuel, but forget to be grateful for the opportunity to own a car and to travel wherever we choose in this country. Thank you for reading thes...

Friday, November 10, 2006. Designated Gloaters and Adios, Anonymous. When I re-launched this blog on November 1st using the Blogger platform I did so knowing that, among the tools available, was the "comments" section. That tool was not available with my previous platform. I looked forward to the views of readers, pro and con, and still do. With all that in mind, please keep writing. I'm always eager to hear an opposing viewpoint and will post those right along with the few who like what I write in a...
