Christina's LIS Rant

So long old friend: Cancelling Dialog. By Christina Pikas) Aug 14 2015. Blue sheets for each database made its structure explicit and you could go from one to the next and quickly make sense of them to decide how to modify your search. Now, with years of trying to be more like Google and concentrating resources on an undergrad audience, it's all mystery meat. If you read the instructions for a database you can maybe eventually figure it out, but not like the olden days. The future of the MLS program.

So MPOW is approaching an anniversary and we're looking at retrospectives of all sorts. What are the top articles we've published in the literature? What do you mean by top? An article published last week (ok, if in a special issue it might come complete with citations attached) with one published 5 years ago?

CMC stuff I'm reading. Aug 06 2015 Published by Christina Pikas. The computer mediated communication field of research is of course very important to my dissertation, but it's so vast that it's been difficult to know where to look beyond the assigned references in my doctoral seminar (see - this is why they need the big high powered seminars). Many of these are self-archived online so no barriers! If I get a chance, I may come back and summarize these like I did for my comps. I still find those helpful.

http://christinaslisrant.scientopia.org/2015/08/11/the-future-of-the-mls-program

The future of the MLS program. Aug 11 2015 Published by Christina Pikas. Attributes of Successful Information Professionals. The findings indicate that successful information professionals are not those who wish to seek a quiet refuge out of the public’s view. They need to be collaborative, problem solvers, creative, socially innovative, flexible and adaptable, and have a strong desire to work with the public. Ensure a Balance of Competencies and Abilities. Re-Thinking the MLS Begins with Recruitment.

Silencing, librarianship, and gender: a preface – Gavia Libraria

http://gavialib.com/2013/07/silencing-librarianship-and-gender-a-preface

Silencing, librarianship, and gender: a preface. Some months ago, the Loon had occasion to stop her nominal boss, the department chair, in the hallway to say, “So… that last published piece? Is apparently upset about it. You should know, in case it becomes a larger issue.” The Loon then briefly explained a few relevant details, apologized for the potential fuss, and explained that she didn’t want her nominal boss blindsided. And its occasioning screed by Andy Woodworth. In academic librarianship, the Loo...

A New Librarian's Information Science Journey. Saturday, January 29, 2011. National Anthem and Indiana Woman. I want to post about something that may not have anything to do with information literacy, but we could stretch the argument. I came across this news story. A few minutes ago. Here’s another link at ABC. Now, I’m not one to get emotional or misty eyed over patriotic offerings. I usually think people go a bit far with that kind of stuff. I wish I had this young woman’s talent. So, it’s makin...

http://englemanknowledgebase.blogspot.com/2011/06/personal-happy-post.html

A New Librarian's Information Science Journey. Sunday, June 5, 2011. So, I was all freaking out about my 29. It’s one year from 30, boo hoo. But apparently 29 is going to be an awesome year. And all that’s been in the last ten days. Seriously, I’m employed! At an academic library! I actually had to turn down another potential job in order to take this one. How awesome is that? I met with the reference team and the Dean last Thursday. They are such a cool bunch of people. It’s nice to see. I always do this.

A New Librarian's Information Science Journey. Wednesday, December 1, 2010. Welcome to Knowledge Base. The first post, however, is for fun and a little bragging. I'm posting my comps results because I'm so very proud. I passed with distinction, which I'm so bragging about for the next few. I'm still new to this blogging experience, so there will most likely be several technical snafus. More learning! I'll be back next week with an actual topic. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A New Librarian's Information Science Journey. Friday, May 27, 2011. Webinar Participation: The Fine Art of Weeding. I’ve developed a love of weeding in libraries. Libraries need healthy collections. Weeding, much like in gardening, helps them accomplish this. And I’ll admit it’s taken me years to gain an appreciation for this task. I think working on a mock collection development policy for a hospital library helped raise my awareness. Books sitting on shelves also cost money-just sitting there. Medical...

My Life Written

Saturday, March 17, 2012. I've Been A Busy Little Bee. I find myself many times cruising on "auto-pilot" and then becoming startled as I realize I wasn't even paying attention to how I got from point A to point B. I know God is using this journey to show me some things about myself, things He wants me to allow Him to change, things He wants to help blossom in me, revelations He wants to awaken within me and speak through me. So here is what I have been up to:. You can link to my ChristinaMichele FB Page.
