The Back Rank: level 20 complete
http://thebackrank.blogspot.com/2009/12/level-20-complete.html
Tuesday, December 01, 2009. I completed level 20 last night, finishing with a 97% score. Not bad, but the goal is 100% and there were a few problems I missed that I really should get. A bit over 2 weeks for the first 2 levels is a slow pace. I should be putting more time into this. After my last update chesstiger. Posted by Loomis @ 10:32 AM 4 comments. Solving tactics problems is about learning patterns and practicing calculation. You are correct that it is about pattern recognition. It is also wort...

The Back Rank: April 2007
http://thebackrank.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 30, 2007. I like getting back into chess, but what I really need is a tournament to look forward to. Alas, that probably won't happen for over a month. At least I have plenty of time for tactical training! Here is a sample from Level 50:. And here's the line that I saw that wasn't quite the right solution:. If gxf3 Qxf3 when mate cannot be stopped. Level 50: 82% (58 done, 76 to go). Posted by Loomis @ 11:18 PM 6 comments. Friday, April 27, 2007. Getting back into it. It uses a rating system...

The Back Rank: July 2006
http://thebackrank.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 31, 2006. Tournament Report: I stink. Well, I played really poorly at the tournament this past weekend. In summary I was 0 -3 =1. Ouch. That's the bad news. The good news is that everyone I lost to was more than 150 points higher rated than me, so hopefully I learned something. Don't cross my mind. This certainly can't lead to making worse moves (can it? But it will surely cost me on the clock. At the moment I'm not getting into time trouble, so I'm going to give it a go! I have read several...

The Endgame Tactician: likesforests is back.
http://likesforests.blogspot.com/2009/06/likesforests-is-back.html
Tuesday, June 23, 2009. My son's born and I'm ready to study chess again. I reckon some rust has settled onto my game, but it's nothing that a little tactical study can't shake off. I plan to stop by everyone's blog in the next couple days to see what's up. I hope all the knights have been making great progress, that dktransform's in good spirits, and that my old A-Team and more will be at the World Open again this year. Have a good one! Our youngest darling just turned 2yo. Kids are such an adventure.

The Endgame Tactician: Blitzkrieg
http://likesforests.blogspot.com/2009/03/blitzkrieg.html
Sunday, March 08, 2009. In my January tournament, two games entered the Old Indian. Which I was unprepared for. In my February tournament, similarly two games entered the Stonewall. And then there was a Winawer. According to my Moskalenko, .Bf8 followed by .Bb7 was a surprising pet line of Petrosian. My opponent looked surprised. He broke the tournament silence to say so! I need more experience. I've turned to blitz. Ah the torture of the French player. I don't know why you guys do it. :). Most people gr...

The Endgame Tactician: World Open Victory!
http://likesforests.blogspot.com/2008/07/world-open-victory.html
Monday, July 07, 2008. With 5 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses I clinched 5th place at the World Open 2008. It was satisfying. I do not suck at chess. I played Russians, Chinese, Americans, and an Indian. older folks with experience on their side, younger folks with sharp wits, and one coached by NM Dan Heisman. I held my own. Being in Philadelphia for the 4th of July with blunderprone, chessloser, Ivan, and Shelly (superknight42) rocked. They're wonderful. Wow let me be the first to say congratulations!

The Back Rank: September 2006
http://thebackrank.blogspot.com/2006_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 29, 2006. I'm making it in time for Friday this week! I'm still waiting on CT-Art and the books I ordered, so most of my chess time this week was spent on Chess Tactics Server (CTS). And I am definitely getting better there. My rating is up to 1668 after 14096 tries (high of 1670). This is about a 50 point improvement since I started the Friday updates 8 weeks and 7000 tries ago and more than 110 points higher than when I first started at CTS. Team 4545 Round 3 Report: Victory! Chess Blog Carnival III has arrived →. March 1, 2011 · 3:22 pm. Lots of easy tactics. Empirical Rabbit is talking about starting on the Heisman-Bain path for tactics training, and has a great post explaining. The direction he’s taking on it. I’ve started on the same path, also inspired by Mr. Heisman. My internal debate though, is whether to go through the problems in the Bain book, or whether to use a custom problem set on chesstempo.com. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
