In 1994 Cheltenham Civic Society initiated the restoration of the Bandstand, first built in 1856 and one of the oldest, if not the oldest in the country. Following its restoration, the Friends of Montpellier Bandstand and Gardens was established, and since then the Friends have played a significant role in the development of the gardens' restoration management plan and contributed many volunteer hours.
