Monthly Archives: July 2014. July 30, 2014. White people in China are like Western motorcyclists: passing each other on opposite sides of the road they share a moment of recognition, a small ahead tilt, a short wave, some small gesture of solidarity as if too say, you’re not alone, buddy. I’m with ya. This sense of kinship, though ephemeral, has been a … Continue reading →. Follow Missives From China on WordPress.com. When the Going Get’s Tough, Cry Into Your Tofu. April 7, 2015. How (Not) To Camp On The Great Wall. January 9, 2015. How To Correctly Plan for a Hike:. Step One: Check the weather report before you go. Step Two: Pack all necessary equipment from sleepwear to sausages. Step three: Make sure someone in your group knows how to start a fire. That, in a nutshell, is what it was like when my four friends and I spent a night on the Great Wall at JianKou. There And Back Again (A Couchsurfing Tale). March 31, 2015. A few weeks ago I accepted a Couchsurfer. I wondered. I felt horrible, the email was three days old! I should have responded earlier! I left to do some shopping, hoping she was intrepid enough to be able to find some. Working electronic device on which to get my messages. I’d told her I’d meet her at my subway station at 4 pm unless I heard otherwise. What is going on with my life? Why am I even here? Alone In China. Killing myself? Oh, the irony.

When the Going Get’s Tough, Cry Into Your Tofu. April 7, 2015. You know that scene in every movie where everything’s gone to hell in a hand basket? When the main characters are in major trouble and the situation looks hopeless? Nah) Well anyway, that’s what the past week felt like for me. What this means is that for the last few days I’ve been limping around the office trying to figure out who is going to be my new co-teacher to then come home to a (possibly very nice) Chinese lady laying in the li...

October 14, 2014. What’s pink, has four walls and no mattress? You guessed it, my room. After spending one week at my friend Alicia’s house and two weeks at the Home Inn near the Anli Park Training Center, I finally have a permanent residence:. Having said that, after living here for a month (! That’s it. That’s the whole thing. *sigh*. I can go to the bathroom. 8230;and shower and brush my teeth at the same time! She Works Hard For The Money. October 17, 2014. I’ve got a job! I know, I know, I’m a bit late. But two months into this job I can say that it’s a good one and I’m going to keep it. So which contract did I end up taking? The very last one I was offered, by a company called Best Learning. I signed a one year contract ending August 4th to teach English to kids from the ages of two to twelve. What don’t Chinese people understand about lines? Why do they think their way is better? Ok, rant over. Thanks f...
