Peripheral Artery Disease
PAD Peripheral arterial disease. An artery is a blood vessel that transports blood away from the heart. The peripheral arteries supply oxygenated blood to the arms and legs. Arteries can narrow and harden due to a buildup of plaque (a condition called atherosclerosis). Peripheral artery disease (PAD) occurs when this plaque buildup is serious enough to reduce the blood flow through the arms and legs. PAD can cause pain, cramping, numbness or weakness in the affected limbs.
