The Brewers Blog: February 2008

http://buntingfordbrewery.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Days In The Life Of An English Brewery. Thursday, 14 February 2008. The Cost Of A Pint. There was, not long back, much made in the media of the arrival of the £4 pint in 2008. Much of this was blamed on increasing raw material prices, with a jolly old dash of increased beer duty. So is it really true? Well yes - if you go to expensive clubs, where I suspect four quid a pint is possibly old hat. But for the rest of us peasants in the real world? So to recap, we have already added 5p to the cost of a pint.

Days In The Life Of An English Brewery. Thursday, 27 November 2008. Please Mr Darling, Give Us A Break. It can't have escaped your notice that Alistair Darling has decreased VAT to 15% in order to save all our lives, and it can't therefore escaped your notice that has been a massive rush of folks saying 'Well done, Darling. That's just the ticket'. What? You hadn't noticed that second bit? The Bluffers Guide To VAT, Duty and Prices. You may want to make a drink before reading this.). 1 How VAT Works.

Last day for reps: November 2007

http://lastdayforreps.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Last day for reps. A thinly-veiled excuse to give the Licensing Act 2003 a kicking. Friday, 30 November 2007. Committee debates s.182 Guidance. And so it came to pass in a committee room in the Palace of Westminster that a group of men declared the s.182 Guidance to be a bit rubbish in places but good enough for the time being. Isn't politics at the cutting edge exciting? There were three substantial criticisms of the Guidance. Also, the gov.t's lack of response to the Live Music Forum's report was n...

Last day for reps: Licensing Act 2003 - minor variations consultation

http://lastdayforreps.blogspot.com/2007/11/licensing-act-2003-minor-variations.html

Last day for reps. A thinly-veiled excuse to give the Licensing Act 2003 a kicking. Thursday, 29 November 2007. Licensing Act 2003 - minor variations consultation. The DCMS have just released a consultation document looking at allowing minor variations to Premises Licences and Club Premises Certificates. The issue of minor variations arises most often when someone is looking to change the layout of their premises. 2 The fundamentalists, who follow the letter of the law to the word and demand a variation ...

Last day for reps: Will the s182 Guidance be up for reconsideration?

http://lastdayforreps.blogspot.com/2007/11/will-s182-guidance-be-up-for.html

Last day for reps. A thinly-veiled excuse to give the Licensing Act 2003 a kicking. Wednesday, 14 November 2007. Will the s182 Guidance be up for reconsideration? Ah, now this is interesting, although it does show me up slightly. Having just said that the govt's standard procedure on anything alcohol-related is to refer to their pending review (which Gordon Brown did have the kindness to do in the Commons this morning) they've now gone a step further. Which means what then? The Guidance is simply that - ...

http://lastdayforreps.blogspot.com/2007_12_01_archive.html

Last day for reps. A thinly-veiled excuse to give the Licensing Act 2003 a kicking. Tuesday, 18 December 2007. Live Music Forum report - the government's reponse. Back in July the Live Music Forum (LMF) reported on how the licensing system should be improved to allow music to live, strive and survive in England and Wales. Five months later the government have responded. You were expecting maybe the cut and thrust of lively debate? Please, that's not the DCMS way. So what have they said? The marquee pledg...

Last day for reps: October 2007

http://lastdayforreps.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Last day for reps. A thinly-veiled excuse to give the Licensing Act 2003 a kicking. Monday, 8 October 2007. A timely warm-up to something I intend to post on shortly. Chris Maclean, blogger of sorts for The Publican, has had to apply for some TENs and is less than impressed by the new 'light touch' the regime affords them. He has 14 events to apply for and describes the process thus:. Compared to the old system under which letters to the mags and police plus a £10 fee would have accomplished the same.

Last day for reps. A thinly-veiled excuse to give the Licensing Act 2003 a kicking. Thursday, 29 November 2007. LA03 - minor variations consultation cont. Right, these are my knee-jerk, as-they-occur thoughts on the minor variations consultation, or “Legislative Reform Order, Proposal to Introduce a Simplified Process for Minor Variations to Premises Licences and Club Premises Certificates” as they call it. Yes, without a doubt. Do you agree with this broad definition of a ‘minor variation? Option 2 - Am...

Last day for reps: Public Health: ethical issues

http://lastdayforreps.blogspot.com/2007/11/public-health-ethical-issues.html

Last day for reps. A thinly-veiled excuse to give the Licensing Act 2003 a kicking. Tuesday, 13 November 2007. Public Health: ethical issues. A report was published by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics. Today It's job was to "consider the responsibilities of governments, individuals and others in promoting the health of the population.". As far as the govt's alcohol strategy is concerned this bit is quite damning:. And as an (effective) alternative the report recommends "increasing taxes on alcoholic bev...

Last day for reps: Happy 2nd Birthday LA03!

http://lastdayforreps.blogspot.com/2007/11/happy-2nd-birthday-la03.html

Last day for reps. A thinly-veiled excuse to give the Licensing Act 2003 a kicking. Saturday, 24 November 2007. Happy 2nd Birthday LA03! Happy birthday and, as my parents used to say to me, well done for making it this far. But how much further will our beloved Act make it? We'll see what comes of that and go from there I suppose. I've still not picked up on the reasoning behind the Guidance being sent there in the first place. If anyone knows then please let me know in the comments. We'll see about that.
