Blue Jay Barrens: November 2014

https://bluejaybarrens.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Mowing Small Problem Areas. This end of the field, out as far as the second tree, was once a nearly impenetrable thicket of Multiflora Rose. I say nearly impenetrable, because I managed to fight my way to the center and slowly cut my way out in all directions. Since then, native plants have been quickly filling in and this year, I only found five small rose canes requiring herbicide treatment. This brush pile was composed of a mix of larger species. Its six foot height h...

Blue Jay Barrens: February 2015

https://bluejaybarrens.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 27, 2015. Cardinals - The Evening Birds. The composition of species at the bird feeder progressively changes through the course of a day. I think of Blue Jays as the morning birds, because they make their most concentrated visits shortly after sunrise. At the other end of the day are the Cardinals, the last birds to leave the feeders in the evening gloaming. With an intensified twilight appearance at the feeders, Cardinals are definitely the evening birds. The glare of the setting sun so...

Blue Jay Barrens: Black Rat Snake

https://bluejaybarrens.blogspot.com/2015/05/black-rat-snake.html

Monday, May 11, 2015. Yesterday, I had my first Black Rat Snake encounter of the year. I usually find them basking in the sun at this time of year, but the high temperatures have topped 90. F every day this past week, so there has been no need for snakes to seek the sun for warmth. I think this is a good photo for people with a fear of snakes. Who could be afraid of an animal that is powerless to stop a fly from riding along on its nose? Monday, May 11, 2015. May 11, 2015 at 11:46 PM. Subscribe to: Post ...

Blue Jay Barrens: May 2015

https://bluejaybarrens.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 29, 2015. Snapping Turtle Laying Eggs. A big turtle on a big ant hill is a pretty easy thing to see from a distance. I didn’t even question my first glance identification of this object. I just headed over to take a closer look. Once the underground cavity is completed, the turtle begins to lay eggs. Eggs were dropped at a rate of one or two per minute until a total of about 30 eggs was reached. After each egg was dropped, the turtle used her leg to sweep the area where the egg fell to make s...

Blue Jay Barrens: Blooming Season Potato Dandelions

https://bluejaybarrens.blogspot.com/2015/05/blooming-season-potato-dandelions.html

Friday, May 15, 2015. Blooming Season Potato Dandelions. Sunlight is a key factor in determining whether or not a Potato Dandelion, Krigia dandelion. Will bloom. Woodland populations receive much of their sunlight prior to emergence of leaves on the deciduous trees. Even in mid-May, the tree leaves have not developed enough to completely block the sun. This is the most common condition. Leaves and flower stalks severely trimmed back. Judging by the amount of leaves being produced, the container bound Pot...

Wanderin' Weeta (With Waterfowl and Weeds): Dancing anemone

http://wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/2015/08/dancing-anemone.html

Wanderin' Weeta (With Waterfowl and Weeds). Nature notes and photos from wanderings in BC, Canada, mostly in the Lower Fraser Valley, Bella Coola, and Vancouver Island. Good places to walk. Sunday, August 02, 2015. I've been asked for photos of my entire setup. I'm working on it, but it's easier said than done. This is part of the reason why. I get sidetracked. And in between those times, he sometimes dances. I'll post the whole kit and kaboodle tomorrow, I think. Glad to see hes still doing well! If you...

Friday, July 31, 2015. Aren't these wings pretty? Wood gnat, Sylvicola sp. And he flew directly to the flashlight I was using as a side light, and stood there, posing for me. And yes, I can see the halteres, one on either side, where the second pair of wings would be if he weren't a fly. View my complete profile.

Inner Artist: December 2014

Wednesday, December 10, 2014. 50 Ways to Paint A Nautilus. She said to me. The answer is easy if you. I'd like to help you in your struggle. There must be fifty ways.". An early attempt at a still life with nautilus. Attempting the stripes on the shell. And then there are those darn stripes! I was so nervous about messing up the stripes that my hand was shaking as I tried to paint them. Another attempt at a still life with nautilus. Maybe I needed to take a deep breath and approach this in a different wa...

Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Hey, where'd it go? Time elapsed, elation to despair: 4 seconds. From the bees point of view? Thanks. Yes, its all in the point of view, isnt it? Woods Walks and Wildlife: West Coast Neighbors (Or, We Have Phoebes Here, Too!)

http://woodswalksandwildlife.blogspot.com/2015/08/west-coast-neighbors-or-we-have-phoebes.html

Sunday, August 9, 2015. West Coast Neighbors (Or, We Have Phoebes Here, Too! After almost a year sharing a yard. With friendly Eastern Phoebes back in Ohio, I've come to really love these little flycatchers. So I was super happy to discover that we have phoebe neighbors here in California, too! A Black Phoebe keeps showing up in our back yard to hunt for flying insects, and it doesn't seem to mind at all when I hang out with it (just a few yards away):. Apparently these big doves have displaced most of t...

New Hampshire Garden Solutions. Exploring Nature in New Hampshire. Time for a Climb. Into the Land of Ice and Stone. March 4, 2015 by New Hampshire Garden Solutions. Right beside the green ice in the previous photo was this black / brown ice, which I’ve never seen here or anywhere else before. I’d guess that it was either soil or minerals that gave it this color. Note how the snow below it looks dirty. My favorite color is the blue ice, and this was the bluest ice I’ve ever seen. There was water runn...

Blue Jay banter as well as other interesting Baseball conversation. Friday, September 09, 2011. Encarnation was the key bat in the triumph of the Blue Jays. First baseman Edwin Encarnacion broke a tie in the eighth inning three-run double beating to give the Blue Jays a 11-10 victory over the Boston Red Sox. The Blue Jays were imposed in the attack and prevented the Red Sox starter Tim Wakefield, to get win number 200 for his entire career. Wakefield pitched five innings and left with no choice. Ortiz ho...

Wednesday, November 8, 2017. Of course, that doesn’t mean I found every invasive shrub there was to find. Surrounding native vegetation often hid the invaders. Dappled sunlight could also be effective camouflage. Despite these obstacles, I drastically reduced the number of unwelcome shrubs. Even shrubs that appear impossible to miss can be hidden from view. This Bush Honeysuckle could not be seen from the other side of the tree. The clump may appear to be spread over a rather wide space, but clipping the...
