Make ‘Em All Mexican. A Prayer for the Earth. The Brown Dot Project 2015. Betty Ann Brown, art historian and curator. Constructed of handmade paper on armatures of bent branches, the Tree People range from a singular head with a profile recalling the Maya Indians of Southern Mexico, to a ghostly deer skull with spiny twig antlers, to a haunting face with tangled roots for a head. Tree People can be considered totems, that is, emblems for the mythic beings that watch over or protect groups of humans.

Make ‘Em All Mexican. A Prayer for the Earth. The Brown Dot Project 2015. I have always wanted to create images that are unique to my personal experience. My life has been full of travel and study of art, history, and culture in many countries. Over the past decade I began combining my Latino aesthetic and international travel encounters with my knowledge of indigenous philosophy to create the unfamiliar art image and experience. Beyond the Comfort Zone: December 2010
http://sandrayagi.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Beyond the Comfort Zone. Sunday, December 19, 2010. After hours of staring at the painting, when I try to go to sleep later that night, I can actually see after-images of the scales when my eyes are closed. Kind of like a phantom image, not as defined as when I am actually looking at it. I suppose the paintings are like children. Today I'm just a little frustrated with them. Tomorrow when I look at them at the beginning of a new day, maybe I'll be happy with them. Links to this post. I have sketched at t...

Giant Earrings | Linda Vallejo

Make ‘Em All Mexican. A Prayer for the Earth. The Brown Dot Project 2015. Around this time, I visited MOMA in New York and saw Claes Oldenburg’s oversized pop sculptures. I was captivated by the stitching and sewing inherent in the work as well as their enormous size and sense of humor. To carry the myth even further I imagine that the giant earrings would be worn by a colossus indigenous goddess. I wonder what god used Oldenburg’s giant ice pack or telephone, or ate that huge hamburger!

The Drop: January 2009

Friday, January 30, 2009. Guerilla art at Los Angeles Art Show and Art L.A. Hen I heard about LA Art Show and Art LA coming to town, I thought it would be fun to go set up right out front and paint. So I did! First I went to Art LA. At the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. When I got there, I asked the security (traffic control) guys if they minded if I set up and painted the building. They were surprisingly. Receptive to the idea. I got set up right across the stree. T from the main entrance to the event.
