Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. The Big Squeeze: 2016. May 18, 2016. Is usually an annual competition for teenage accordion players, but this year a tenth anniversary concert was held on the plaza in front of the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum. I think this was partly due to a change in coordinators at the sponsoring organization, Texas Folklife. The concert was not well-attended, probably because it conflicted with the Pecan Street Festival. And the O. Henry Pun-Off. April 10, 2016.

Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. Newer posts →. May 28, 2016. The West Austin Studio Tour. Spanned two weekends in May. While November’s EAST. Is limited to East Austin, WEST (of I-35) covers a huge swath of Austin: from up north around Rt. 183 to down south near William Cannon. I toured on the second weekend, traveling around north Austin on Saturday and in south Austin on Sunday. Neither day was crowded, possibly due to UT graduation. Continue reading →. May 23, 2016. BookPeople | Austin Downtown Diary

Skip to primary content. May 5, 2015. To celebrate Independent Bookstore Day. Bill and I walked over to our beloved local indie, BookPeople. In existence since 1970, the current store is located at the corner of Lamar and Sixth Street. With the nearby Whole Foods. And Amy’s Ice Cream. This area is a fun destination and an easy one-mile walk from our apartment. BookPeople hosts numerous author talks and book signings throughout the year. A few weeks ago, I listened to Kabir Sehgal. The stairway to the sec...
O. Henry Pun-off: 2015 | Austin Downtown Diary
http://austindowntowndiary.com/keep-austin-weird/o-henry-pun-off-2015
Skip to primary content. O Henry Pun-Off: 2015. May 12, 2015. The 38th annual O. Henry Pun-Off. Was held last Saturday in the backyard of the O. Henry House on Fifth Street. Every year the crowd seems larger, and I’m guessing that close to 1000 people watched this year’s event. A few even perched in the giant live oak trees that shade much of Brush Square. Local favorite Minor Mishap Marching Band. Six judges scored each participant, and then their highest and lowest numbers were eliminated to determine ...

Musings from a 50-something midlife road tripper. Join the ride. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. After about ten years of wearing nonfitted stretch waistbands, she insists that her waistline has completely disappeared. I'm always thrilled when I discover a writer whose work I've never explored. One night the guest on The Daily Show. Or Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife. Thinking my summer reading list just got bigger.). I've just finished My Planet - Finding Humor in the Oddest Places. Midlife Roadtripper: Blowing the Whistle

Musings from a 50-something midlife road tripper. Join the ride. Thursday, March 25, 2010. Who dares to teach must never cease to learn. Yeah, Latin. Like I know how to teach that. But in this stint of substitute teaching, I've become quite adept at learning a new subject in only a matter of moments. Often subbing is only babysitting as teachers leave boring worksheets or study time. But I find refereeing. A room full of middle or high school students. If students become unruly in PE? I merely blow that ...

http://midlifejobhunter.blogspot.com/2015/07/soap-box-derby.html
Musings from a 50-something midlife road tripper. Join the ride. Wednesday, July 8, 2015. It may be that all games are silly. But then, so are humans. What to do on a rainy Saturday. My husband and I have grown accustomed to this not being a problem as it hasn't rained in Central Texas in the past few years. This year the skies have produced much moisture and prompted a necessary change in our mindsets. A Soap Box Derby. An adult Soap Box Derby. We marveled at some of the artwork on the street. And found...
Midlife Roadtripper: Road Trip
http://midlifejobhunter.blogspot.com/2011/07/road-trip.html
Musings from a 50-something midlife road tripper. Join the ride. Tuesday, July 26, 2011. The road to success is dotted with many tempting parking places. Some of you may recall these photos of my middle son, Jordan. He spent the summer before college graduation interning on a ranch in south Texas, hand raising baby deer. As you can see, life with these babies was rather intimate. I didn't say, "I told you so." I say those words to my husband every chance I get, but I try not to say them to my kids. On th...

Midlife Roadtripper: It's Hot in Texas
http://midlifejobhunter.blogspot.com/2015/07/its-hot-in-texas.html
Musings from a 50-something midlife road tripper. Join the ride. Wednesday, July 22, 2015. It's Hot in Texas. What dreadful hot weather we have! It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance. I'm too sweaty to get in the shower. I will sweat in there and sweat when I get out so I figured while I await my body temp to come down, I'd write a blog post. Seems to happen about this time every year. I have nothing better to write about than heat and dying plants. Perhaps I need a new summer gig. Pentas are ha...

Musings from a 50-something midlife road tripper. Join the ride. Friday, July 31, 2015. The weather is holding at 100 degrees. Hiding in the cool of the house and no better time than now to post my July scavenging. The month started out with a bang with the Fourth of July festivities. Has pretty much petered out now. Long, hot days of summer. Gotta love 'em. As always, visit Made with Love. If you'd like to join the Scavenger Hunt. The Difficult July List. D is for Devotion. When did these babies grow up?
Midlife Roadtripper: Let's Talk Scrabble
http://midlifejobhunter.blogspot.com/2012/06/lets-talk-scrabble.html
Musings from a 50-something midlife road tripper. Join the ride. Friday, June 1, 2012. When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves. My husband thinks playing Scrabble online is a complete waste of time. He tells me this while he is flipping channels on the television set. I'm thinking there are worse ways to spend my time and I enjoy playing Scrabble. I'm good at it. So, there. I voiced my complaint on their feedback bar - after waiting two days for that bar to...
Midlife Roadtripper: Are Morning People Truly Better?
http://midlifejobhunter.blogspot.com/2014/04/are-morning-people-truly-better.html
Musings from a 50-something midlife road tripper. Join the ride. Tuesday, April 1, 2014. Are Morning People Truly Better? I couldn't find an apt quote for this post so I made one up. When I get up in the morning, it takes me a while to get going. I don't care to have a conversation with anyone. I need time to gather my brain. It took me a long time to get to sleep and, therefore, a long time to wake up. As you can see, my last post on finding a rhythm has had no definitive effect on my day to day. I'...
