Ars Latet Arte: Pretiosa Fames
http://arslatetarte.blogspot.com/2011/02/pretiosa-fames.html
A Latin teacher rambles unconvincingly about Latin literature. Saturday, February 5, 2011. Once again I have the excellent Dr. Gilleland. To thank for drawing my attention to a lovely passage of Latin to savour (and dissect! A Martial poem in which he revisits the often tawdry Roman theme of nostalgia for a rural birthplace. But it does provide scope for some fine imagery, and Martial rises above his usual glib standards when comparing his beloved Bilbilis to imperial Rome. Martial, 10.96, 5-14). Goes be...

A Latin teacher rambles unconvincingly about Latin literature. Saturday, August 21, 2010. No posts in the last couple of weeks, but I have an excuse of sorts: I've been on a wonderful skiing trip with my year group at school. And now, coming back from the howling icy wind on Mt. Blue Cow. To a beautiful early-spring day in Sydney, it seems more appropriate than ever to feature one of my favourite Latin poems of them all, Horace's famous ode from his fourth book. Immortalia ne speres, monet annus et almum.
Ars Latet Arte: Quis Actaeon? - Part II
http://arslatetarte.blogspot.com/2010/06/quis-actaeon-part-ii.html
A Latin teacher rambles unconvincingly about Latin literature. Sunday, June 13, 2010. And so the story of the violent death of the impious Pentheus continues, with Ovid in typically crisp poetic form:. Ruit omnis in unum. Turba furens; cunctae coeunt trepidumque sequuntur,. Iam trepidum, iam verba minus violenta loquentem,. Iam se damnantem, iam se peccasse fatentem. Saucius ille tamen 'fer opem, matertera' dixit. Moveant animos Actaeonis umbrae! Illa, quis Actaeon, nescit dextramque precanti. 716: the r...
Ars Latet Arte: September 2010
http://arslatetarte.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
A Latin teacher rambles unconvincingly about Latin literature. Sunday, September 26, 2010. The notion of a "golden age" must be common to virtually all cultures, given the frequency with which the idea crops up in the world's literature. The Romans, of course, liked to imagine an era of pastoral bliss, presided over by their ancient spirit Saturnus. Who was subsequently equated with the Greek Cronos. Of the Aeneid, fascinating. Primus ab aetherio venit Saturnus Olympo. Et belli rabies et amor successit h...

A Latin teacher rambles unconvincingly about Latin literature. Sunday, October 31, 2010. Continuing the theme of human-animal relationships from the last post, I very much enjoyed teaching the tenth. Book of Virgil's Aeneid to my HSC class this last year, and one of the passages that appealed to both me and the students the most was the battle-speech-cum-farewell of the warrior-king Mezentius, addressed to his faithful steed Rhaebus. Haud deiectus equum duci iubet. hoc decus illi,. Iussa aliena pati et d...

Ars Latina La Habana 2009 – Identidades y contextos.
