천체물리 연구실이 보유하고 있는 주요 연구기자재는 아래와 같다. Linux server 4 대. 은하간의 상호 작용과 병합. 구상성단과 구상성단계 질량분포의 진화. 은하의 원반과 나선팔의 형성과 진화. 은하 중심부 거대질량 블랙홀과 그 주변의 진화. 컴퓨터 간의 통신속도가 최근 들어 비약적으로 증가함에 따라, 가장 성능이 우수한 컴퓨터 시스템은 과거와 같이 거대하고 값비싼 단일의 컴퓨터가 아니라 보통의 컴퓨터를 빠른 통신장비를 이용하여 병렬로 구성한 시스템이 되었다. 본 천체물리 연구실과 같은 과의 공간물리 연구실이 공동으로 투자하여 현재 1 대의 서버와 12 대의 노드로 이루어진 Linux cluster 시스템을 구축, 사용하고 있다. 이 시스템을 이용하여 다양한 particle-based 및 grid-based 시뮬레이션을 수행하고 있다.

The Korean GRAPE Consortium. GRAPE는 입자를 이용하는 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션만을 위한 전용 계산장치로써, 천체물리 연구용으로는 국내에서 처음으로 경희대, 부산대, 서울대 등에 있는 네 연구실이 consortium을 구성하여 공동으로 구입, 사용 중에 있다. 현재 6세대 GRAPE의 최신 버젼인 GRAPE6-BLX64 4대를 구입하여 운영 중에 있으며, 추가로 4대를 구입 중에 있다. GRAPE6-BLX64는 일반 컴퓨터의 PCI-X slot에 설치하는 board 형태이며, cluster로 구성하여 운영될 수 있다. 네 대가 추가되어 총 여덟대로 구성된 GRAPE cluster는 1 Tflops 의 peak performance를 보일 것이다. 은하간의 상호 작용과 병합. 구상성단과 구상성단계 질량분포의 진화. 은하의 원반과 나선팔의 형성과 진화. 은하 중심부 거대질량 블랙홀과 그 주변의 진화. 2 x Dual Core Zeon 5130 (2GHz). 천체물리 연구실은 2003년 가을 문을 연 이래로 다양한 분야의 천문학 및 천체물리 연구를 수행하고 있다. 주 연구분야는 이론과 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션을 통한 은하와 성단의 생성과 진화 연구 및 우주망원경, 지상대형망원경, 전파망원경, 전천탐사자료 등을 이용한 성간물질, 젊은 성단, 은하의 관측 연구 이며, 현재 진행 중인 연구주제는 아래와 같다. 은하 원반의 뒤틀림 현상. 우리은하 구상성단계 질량분포의 역학적 진화. Orion 지역에 있는 필라멘트 모양의 분자구름에 대한 전파관측분석. 별 탄생 초기 분자구름 핵의 운동학적 연구. 적외선 카메라, 태양전파 안테나의 개발 및 운용. 태양 표면에서 발생한 폭발현상에 의한 충격파 형성. SDSS 측광 시스템에서 일어나는 성간적색화 현상의 특성. Formation and maintenance of galactic warps. Dynamical evolution of globular cluster system in the Milky Way.
