My blog about space exploration, space colonization, science, technology, and coding. If you’ve ever seen one of those old 60-70s era space-exploration paintings, you might have been looking at the artwork of Chesley Bonestell. I’m pretty sure a few of those paintings invaded my brain back in my childhood, though I didn’t know the artist at the time. Check out his stuff:. Https:/ www.google.com/search? This guy (Dave Robinson) also has a lot of very nice spacecraft/space-exploration artwork:. Edit: Wikip...

The Soapbox Zone: Well, I've done it
http://soapboxzone.blogspot.com/2007/03/well-ive-done-it.html
Now I have a soapbox too. Political pontifications are sooo much easier than analysis of quantifiable information! Thursday, March 29, 2007. Well, I've done it. I've finally started my own political blog. After 3 or 4 years of contenting myself to lurk and comment on other's websites, I've given in to the urge to bloviate and vent my opinion for all to see. I've been blogging before this, of course, on http:/ amssolarempire.blogspot.com. So I'll keep up the policy of keeping the two blogs seperate. T...

Tiny bike rides again! Monday, May 23, 2011. Http:/ economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/19/the-college-majors-that-do-best-in-the-job-market/. I remember between college and graduate school, I wanted to find a job. I applied to literally 147 different places. Let me also say that probably 140 of the 147 did not involve any kind of college degree. Why? Posted by Master of Forests. I am sure this article has touched all the internet users,. Its really really good post on building up new web site. Masten Spa...

Tiny bike rides again! Friday, October 29, 2010. There is no nobler aspiration of the human intellect than the desire to compass the causes of things. The disposition to find explanations and to develop theories is laudable in itself. It is only in its ill placed use and abuse that it is reprehensible. The vitality of study quickly disappears when the object sought is a mere collocation of unmeaning facts". T Chamberlain, 1897. Posted by Master of Forests. Monday, October 25, 2010. Tiny bike rides again! Monday, September 27, 2010. Not to judge a book by its first chapter but. It's pretty rare that I come across a piece of academic literature that I find interesting yet understandable. I mean, so rare that it almost never happens. It's either, well, that abstract looks cool, but what is going on in that paper? Posted by Master of Forests. Sunday, September 26, 2010. How to convince southerners to protect the environment. The Soapbox Zone: April 2007

Now I have a soapbox too. Political pontifications are sooo much easier than analysis of quantifiable information! Thursday, April 12, 2007. The Trajectory of a Revolution. When I was in college, I walked into the engineering library one day, and made a rather startling observation. One section of the library had bound periodicals, by year. One of these was some sort of journal on nuclear power. In 1970 the first Earth Day was hosted. This is about where the bindings started shrinking. In the late 1980&#...

The Soapbox Zone: Crazy Nuke Idea #1
http://soapboxzone.blogspot.com/2007/04/crazy-nuke-idea-1.html
Now I have a soapbox too. Political pontifications are sooo much easier than analysis of quantifiable information! Thursday, April 12, 2007. Crazy Nuke Idea #1. I don't know enough nuclear physics (yet - I intend to know everything someday, though I also understand on an intellectual level why this is impossible) to tell if this is a good idea or not, but I was thinking:. Furthermore, even when we get it to work, building and operating these plants sounds like a pain in the butt. You have an extremel...

Tiny bike rides again! Friday, January 28, 2011. Crab, Elk, Snowfields. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Strangely enough, that's kind of similar to the definition of Monte Carlo Simulation. Ok, so it's not really the same, but it IS uncanny that Einstein's famous quote made me think of Monte Carlo. I am so fortunate to live near mountains, especially snowy ones. And I'm so fortunate that my job essentially forces me to be near forested...

flat spin: What a clear-cut really looks like.
http://inner-product.blogspot.com/2011/05/what-clear-cut-really-looks-like.html
Tiny bike rides again! Monday, May 30, 2011. What a clear-cut really looks like. On Saturday at work, I saw this neat site. I followed the birding trail down towards the stream from the ridge line, until it got too steep. You can imagine a watershed is shaped like a triangle. By definition, a watershed is the contributing area from which a stream drains, so think about how a valley is "v-shaped" and then imagine that "v" has a back- presto! Posted by Master of Forests.
