One Step at a Time: September 2013
http://one--step--at--a--time.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
One Step at a Time. Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Announcing that he was re-opening the wait-list for the Squamish 50. Race due to a greater-than-expected attrition rate. The race was only twelve days away - two weeks after White River. And four weeks after Mt Hood. My legs were angry with me, so signing up for another 50-mile race this soon would be out of the question. It's not just someone's Smart Car, is it? I looked again. There was a distinct absence of the car2go logo which should have been pl...

One Step at a Time: Orcas Island 50k
http://one--step--at--a--time.blogspot.com/2013/02/orcas-island-50k.html
One Step at a Time. Tuesday, February 5, 2013. On Orcas Islands; one of the San Juan Islands just off the Washington coast. It's a bit of trek to get here from Vancouver, involving a couple of hours of driving, a ferry ride and then another car journey around the horseshoe-shaped island. But then this all adds to the sense of adventure. A gang of six of us from Pacific Road Runners made the trip; I, David. After a relaxing evening consuming pasta, Tillamook. Appeared to have forgotten her clothes. All th...

One Step at a Time: Rock/Creek Stump Jump 50k
http://one--step--at--a--time.blogspot.com/2013/10/rockcreek-stump-jump-50k.html
One Step at a Time. Thursday, October 17, 2013. Rock/Creek Stump Jump 50k. Not long after FITS Sock Co. Signed us up for their race team, Alex. And I were offered the chance to run in a race close to the company HQ in Tennessee. Obviously, we jumped at the chance, booked flights, registered for the race. But this was in January, and the race was not until October. so we promptly put it to the back of our minds while we concentrated on the rest of our racing seasons. This was a little different. And sudde...

One Step at a Time: Cougar Mountain 50k
http://one--step--at--a--time.blogspot.com/2012/11/cougar-mountain-50k.html
One Step at a Time. Sunday, November 4, 2012. My partner in running crime for the weekend, that I would pick her up around 1 pm. As I rolled up at 2:30, she bounded towards the car clad in hot pink yoga pants, and clutching a yoga mat, as befits a Lululemon employee. "I love it when people are late! She exclaimed, setting what I hoped was to be the tone for a relaxed weekend ahead. We were headed to Washington to run the Cougar Mountain 50k. Clearly, I'm a marketing man's dream. (But if anyone from C...

One Step at a Time: Capitol Peak 50-miler
http://one--step--at--a--time.blogspot.com/2013/05/capitol-peak-50-miler.html
One Step at a Time. Saturday, May 4, 2013. This post is going to be a bit disappointing, because Gary Robbins. Has already written the definitive race report for the Capitol Peak 50-miler. You can read it here. It's brilliant. You might not want to come back after reading that, because there's no way I can live up to it. That, coupled with the fact that I made relatively few calamitous mistakes in this race, is going to make this report a bit boring. Still, I'll do what I can. Let's go. Around this point...

One Step at a Time: Whistler 50
http://one--step--at--a--time.blogspot.com/2013/11/whistler-50.html
One Step at a Time. Monday, November 4, 2013. It's one of the peculiarities of ultramarathons that race directors are not content with making their participants merely run a very long way, but they'll also do what they can to make that distance as difficult as possible. Steep climbs, technical trails , suffocatingly hot temperatures and stinging insects were all features of my last race. Pretty shiny, huh? And they understood entirely. Things were definitely slowing down for me as I finished the third lo...

One Step at a Time: March 2013
http://one--step--at--a--time.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
One Step at a Time. Friday, March 22, 2013. 2013 got off to a pretty good start. I ran a 3:43 50k, hungover, on New Year's Day. I notched up my highest mileage month ever and even set a PB for 8k (partly because I hadn't run an 8k race for nearly two years, but let's not dwell on that). After a shaky start, I had a decent run at the Orcas Island 50k. And followed up a week later with a respectable sub-1:20 at the First Half half-marathon. So, it's fair to say that coming into Chuckanut. Not bad, eh?

One Step at a Time: White River 50 Mile Endurance Run
http://one--step--at--a--time.blogspot.com/2013/08/white-river-50-mile-endurance-run.html
One Step at a Time. Thursday, August 22, 2013. White River 50 Mile Endurance Run. So this one had been on my to-do list for a while, ever since I'd seen photos from previous years. It looked special. I'd signed up for it within a few days of DNFing the San Diego 100, although at that point I didn't realize that I'd have run another 50 mile race. Just two weeks earlier. Ah well, a couple of weeks is enough time to recover, right? But I think we do climb up that one. Eventually, just as I was starting to t...
