Happiness and Freedom | Afronomics

https://afronomics.wordpress.com/2008/03/04/happiness-and-freedom

March 4, 2008 at 7:30 pm. That ambition is overrated and argues that “happiness consists in freedom”. Despite the truthiness. Of this sentiment, many people apparently disagree. The typical ambitious Brit toils many hours a day, with long commutes to and from work. Such ambitious folk could instead take a pay cut, move to a smaller house and thereby unencumber themselves. But they don’t. They prefer to be fettered by the burden of work. A little depressing if so. Entry filed under: Happiness.

Conservation, Opportunity Costs and Kenya’s No.1 Foreign Currency Earner | Afronomics

https://afronomics.wordpress.com/2008/03/07/conservation-opportunity-costs-and-kenyas-no1-foreign-currency-earner

Conservation, Opportunity Costs and Kenya’s No.1 Foreign Currency Earner. March 7, 2008 at 6:28 pm. Has recently released this. Excellent presentation, summarised here. The very important point of the article seems to be that Kenyan wildlife conservation will go the way of the dodo as a result of the increasing profitability of agriculture. I think there are several implications of this:. 2 Land grabbing or encroachment into forest reserves may increase. Entry filed under: 1. Recommended Books on Africa.

Rain, Rain, Go Away | Afronomics

https://afronomics.wordpress.com/2008/03/02/rain-rain-go-away

Rain, Rain, Go Away. March 2, 2008 at 12:35 pm. Suggests that transitory bad weather is associated with regime change in Sub-Saharan Africa. Researchers show that the economic downturns experienced as a result of drought reduce the costs of removing autocrats and enhance the chances of democratisation. So the real cause is economic downturn – not drought per se. But what are the implications of this finding in the face of strengthening Sub-Saharan economies? And the implications of climate change?
