A team of volunteers helping to build a home in the Village of Hope, Malawi. Saturday, May 07, 2005. Originally uploaded by yo paully. We hit the halfway point of our trip. Today we spent the day at Lake Malawi, the country's most significant geographical feature. The Lake is a beautiful stretch of water that features fishing villages and rocky islands, it's approximately 100 km away from Lilongwe. Lake Malawi is the third largest lake in Africa, covering almost a fifth of Malawi's total area.

A team of volunteers helping to build a home in the Village of Hope, Malawi. Sunday, May 08, 2005. Originally uploaded by yo paully. Some other words that we've learned are "Moni", this means hi, "Zikommo", this means Thank You, "Molie Bwanja" means see you tomorrow, "Buss" means enough, "Bwana" means Boss. This morning we split up into two groups. Some of us attended a church in the city (Lilongwe) and some of us attended a church service in a village. Each were different, but great experiences.

The Faces of Action Africa | By resident photojournalist Christena Dowsett

My thoughts drifted to other early mornings before the light unveiled its prize sunrise. I thought of how happy I had been to find baby granny smith apples in Maridi.
