A Blog in the Forest

A Blog in the Forest. Wednesday, October 13, 2010. Fall has brought on a bout of wild plant enthusiasm. I just found out about and ordered Samuel Thayer's DVD on edible wild plant foraging (ha, guess that's one documentary off my to-do list! I was watching it this past Saturday, and then went out to clean up the garden a bit. I was looking at a plant growing all over the place with very distinctly spearhead-shaped leaves, and I realized that had definitely been in the video I was watching. After half an ...

A Blog in the Forest. Wednesday, July 28, 2010. One thing I love about the edible wild plant hobby is learning all the Latin names for the different species. Curly Dock) has always been my favorite, just for sounding like it could have ruled Rome if it wanted to. Here are 10 common wild edibles. As a Byki vocabulary list. If you download Byki Express (which is free) and import the list, the program will help you memorize them via magical memory algorithms. If you have Byki Deluxe or Express. I wound up d...

A Blog in the Forest: iBird for iPhone

http://ablogintheforest.blogspot.com/2010/05/ibird-for-iphone.html

A Blog in the Forest. Sunday, May 2, 2010. Wow, it's been a while since I posted on this blog. :). I recently purchased iBird for the iPhone (North edition) and I wanted to mention it here because it's a really neat little app. I looked up a few birds that I know are local to us, and it's fun listening to the song audio for those birds, and learning which of them is making the songs we hear every morning. The other outdoorsy app I have is the Geocaching app (btw, Geocaching just turned 10, happy birthday!

A Blog in the Forest: June 2008

http://ablogintheforest.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

A Blog in the Forest. Wednesday, June 11, 2008. Edible Wild Status Report. Last Saturday I finally grabbed my camera and went out into the backyard to see what edible wild plant images I could capture to get this party started. Since it's also useful to know. A Blog in the Forest. Sunday, July 25, 2010. Showy milkweed was common in Montana, all over the place, in fact, and I knew it was supposed to be a decent edible plant. However, I'd never actually tried it. What I've read about milkweed insists that you boil it through multiple waters for like 15 minutes to get all the bitter out. So I set two pots of water to boil on the stove, one for cooking the pod, the other for changing the water bath with more boiling water. So I ate the whole pod, then figured I'd...

A Blog in the Desert | Adventures and Observations of a Catholic Seminarian

A Blog in the Desert. Adventures and Observations of a Catholic Seminarian. August 28, 2012. I spent three weeks teaching English at Jilin Medical College, in Jilin City. Obviously, it wasn’t a beginner English class; the students had to pass a proficiency test to be able to participate, so their English was pretty good already. We used op-ed pieces from the English version of the government-owned. To build vocabulary and serve as a starting point for discussions. Trip Update: Back from China. I’ll...

Constantly Moving Forwards: A Blog in the Life of Kenion!

Constantly Moving Forwards: A Blog in the Life of Kenion! Sunday, August 16, 2015. I think I need a sunrise,. I'm tired of the sunset.". The title of my blog as a whole is "Constantly Moving Forwards". I never intended to title it such to imply that I was any expert at doing such; I'm certainly not. I did so because I wanted to give readers something positive to look forwards to and help them slice through the troubles they face; I certainly try. Learned along the way regarding the subject, even recently.
