November 3, 2014. It’s hard to make new autism mom friends. I never really know how to start small talk with another person, but I’d missed my chance last week when I first “met” them and I knew that the following week would be our last before preschool, so I took aim and fired: “Coupons– smart! I usually just sit here playing around on my phone.”. 8220;He imitates their behavior,” she said, “so of course, we want him imitating normal behavior.”. Ah There it is. It’s hard to make autism mom friends.

Monthly Archives: November 2014. November 7, 2014. Inviting joy back into the conversation. It never fails– I open my computer and there is another story about an autistic child harmed, or killed, at his or her mother’s hands. There is a big conversation that needs to happen around this. Huge. Yes, part of the conversation is about family and mental health support, of course… but it’s really. About the rest of us. Yes, autism comes with challenges. Big ones, sometimes huge ones. Autism is people, and peo...

I will, overall, try to be aware of not generalizing our experience to apply to other families of kids on the spectrum. Really, you can’t compare these kids to one another any more than you can compare any two children. I can’t tell you what will be best for your child, but I. I’ll be honest here! I’m going to keep adding links as I find them, so check in with my blog roll and links section as it grows! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Address never made public). Monthly Archives: July 2014. July 18, 2014. A new place to find us. I promise, I have a few posts in the works that I’ve been mulling over for a bit and will try to make something happen on this page soon. In the meantime, though, I wanted to share that we now have a Facebook page for Chicken and Ham. That I update with photos and little snippets every few days or so, so feel free to come on over and follow us there as well🙂. What's ordinary for some is an adventure for us! The autism lunch tables.

Monthly Archives: June 2014. June 2, 2014. Incongruousness and the unsuspecting friendly stranger. A quick sidebar: it was the wedding of a friend of M’s who I had only met once, at my own wedding, and what a shame we hadn’t gotten together in the almost six years between– she’s lovely! I left that wedding with a whole crop of new awesome Facebook friends. Can’t do much better than that.). Are they just talking up a storm now? Isn’t it so fun? He’s almost potty-trained! Really, your only other option is ...

We as a society are talking about autism. And we have a lot to say about it. Almost always negative things. November 3, 2014.

October 9, 2014. The autism lunch tables. It’s been kind of messy in my corner of the online autism world lately. Some big events happening and communities imploding and just not good stuff. I’ve written before (somewhere that I apparently can’t find) about trying to find my “autism lunch table”– a place to sit as a new kid in the cafeteria. Don’t sit at the Autism Speaks table; all they talk about over there is the horrors of autism and how it will ruin your family and your child is now lost. I don̵...

Monthly Archives: September 2014. September 12, 2014. One year of autism. It’s been exactly a year. A full year down to the minute, since the phone call I’d been waiting on, when the doctor told me what I already knew: “they both meet the criteria for an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis.”. I’ve been trying to find the exact right way to commemorate this event. What sort of reflective blog post should I be making right now? What is the “point” of marking this anniversary? So heart-meltingly sweet.).
